Sweet, John (17 JUL 1846 - 18? JUL 1917)

The last sad rites for John Sweet, who died last week at his home near Chili (Clark Co., Wis.), were held in the Adventist Church here last Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. Wilson Mallory of the Church of Christ, officiating.

Deceased was born in Susquehanna Co., Penn., July 17th, 1846 and came to Clark Co., Wis. which has since been his home, in May 1875. He has been a patient suffered from a complication of disease, kidney and heart trouble, and confined to his bed since early last December, when it became clear to his friends that he would never be better. He was a man well thought of and had many friends; of a generous and kindly disposition, he was loved most by them who knew him best. All through his long illness his fortitude during his hours of pain demonstrated a constitution worthy of the mighty.

He is survived by two sons and one daughter, Stephen of Beloit, Wis., Frank at home, and Mrs. Lewis Sherman of Spring Coulee, Alberta, Canada; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; by one half-sister, Mrs. Wm. Anthony of York, and two step-sisters, Mrs. John Breese and Mrs. Chas. Hayden, both of Granton.

Interment was made in the Windfall Cemetery. The pallbearers were Otto Reimer, Maurice Dickerson, Fred Hill and Waite Wilcox, four of his town of Fremont neighbors. The choir two was of Chili friends, being Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hallock, Mr. Albert Degener, Mrs. Chas. Fenske, with Mrs. Green at the organ.

Murl Sweet, a grandson of the deceased, not learning of his grandfather’s demise and coming up only on a visit, arrived here from Green County on Saturday night’s midnight and was too late for the funeral.
