Alger, Sidney Anton Jr. (3 April 1927 - 2012) With Flag

Sidney A. Alger, Jr., age 85, of Thorp, passed away at the House of the Dove, in Marshfield, on Friday, August 17, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2012, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thorp. Rev. Dan Welch will officiate and burial of cremains will take place at Riverside Cemetery following services. Visitation will be held at the church, on Friday, from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Sidney Anton Alger, Jr. was born on April 3, 1927, in Thorp, WI, the son of Sidney Sr. and Louise (Anton) Alger. He was raised on the family farm and educated in rural Thorp. Sid entered the U. S. Army Air Corp and served overseas for two years. After his discharge, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Kowalski on September 20, 1947, at St. Hedwig’s Rectory in Thorp. They bought a farm in the Town of Thorp. While farming, Sid also held other jobs, including working at Blue Moon Cheese, Ken Lindquist Machinery, sold for Badger Farm Equipment, sold campers, sold silos, and was the manager at Farmer’s Co-op of Thorp for 28 years. While at the co-op, he often traveled doing appraisals for the co-op and other companies. When he retired from farming in September of 1995, Sid enjoyed going for rides and looking for animals, gong to his great-grandfather’s farm, wheeling & dealing on equipment, gardening, canning, and visiting his children before 7 a.m. on every Saturday morning. In his younger years, he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and camping.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Thorp American Legion, and the Rock Dam Rod & Gun club.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Lorraine, of Thorp; his children: Georgia Morrison, Bob (Donna) Alger, Jim (Cindy) Alger, Joe (Jean) Alger, all of Thorp; nine grandchildren: Cathy, Kevin, Travis, Eric, Scott, Loren, Dustin, Amanda, and Adam; 17 great-grandchildren; nine siblings: Jack Alger of Maplewood, MN, Arlene (Norbert) Seichter of Boyd, Dick (Rosie) Alger of Thorp, Ken (Betty) Alger of Thorp, Joan Ruff of Milwaukee, Jean Stelter of Milwaukee, Carol (Dave) Teclaw of Excelsior, MN, Jerry (Sue) Alger of Mukwonago, and Bill (Maxine) Alger of North Branch, MN; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren: Paul Morrison and Sara Alger; one sister, Sandy Erickson; one son-in-law, George Morrison; one sister-in-law, Elaine Alger; and two brothers-in-law: Tom Ruff and Tom Stelter.
