Work on
W.J. Thayer’s new building is progressing nicely. The brick work for the first
story will be completed this week.
H.E. Williams, Albert Mabie and Fred
Grassman have bought pipeless furnaces of Hale Davis to be installed before cold
weather sets in.
Miss Frieda Garbush of Route 1, with her friend Miss
Julia Rathke of Grand Rapids, left on Monday for Rochester, Minn., on a visit to
relatives of the former.
Sunday’s passenger trains have been discontinued
and an accommodation freight scheduled to arrive here from the west at 11:10
a.m. brings mail and carries passengers.
Harry Birch and family have
moved onto the Frank Davis house, better known as the Sam Gerlach place, and are
nicely settled there since late last week.
Herman Roehl was over from
Chili on business Wednesday and with his brother Frank made a trip to the county
seat that day.
Herman Prgange and son Morris are here from Sheboygan
County and helping Aug. H. Riedel with his farm work for several weeks past.
Harold Garbush, agent for the Oakland and Buick automobiles, went to
Milwaukee Thursday evening on business and attended a banquet given by the
Oakland car dealers association and returned home Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Neiman and their two children, with Mrs. Clifford Stevens and her
daughters Alta and Mae, autoed down from the town of Beaver and spent Sunday
with the L. Stevens family.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Aulf and their four
children of Greenwood autoed down and spent Sunday here with Mr. and Mrs. Peter
Stallman. Mr. and Mrs. Aulf were guests at the Stallmans wedding 31 years ago
and this is their first sight of the bride and groom of that day, since.
Miss Keland, a professional nurse who came up from Milwaukee last week Thursday
to care for baby Brooks Norman at the Erwin Brooks home in Lynn, left on the
return trip Tuesday, the little fellow responding to treatment and gaining so
fast that it was not necessary for her to remain longer.
John Jaborek,
the Hungarian who was so seriously hurt in a runaway accident several weeks
since, was taken suddenly very ill last Saturday and threatened with meningitis
and upon advice of his physician, was taken to the hospital at Marshfield again,
where he is at present apparently recovering.
Oscar Johnson has purchased
the old Chas. Sternitzky farm of 80 acres in the town of Lynn, of the heirs of
the late Mrs. Lucas Hale for the purchase price of $10,250 and will be moving
thereon within the next two weeks. Oscar is horse buying just now and his wagon
shop here in the village is for sale.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thompson and
children of the town of York, with his sister Mrs. Romanzo Davis of Tacoma,
Wash., left last week Thursday on a visit to relatives at La Valle.. The
Thompsons returned home on Tuesday while Mrs. Davis continued on to Viroqua and
is expected to return late this week.
Miss Bernice Stockwell of Spooner,
with Wm. Holway of Madison and Miss Ethel Stockwell of Neillsville, autoed over
from the Co. seat and called on the Baer, Tuesday evening.
Joe Vlainick
and Joe Begich of Milwaukee, after a several months visit with the Steve
Rosendick family on route 4, went home to the city for a month’s stay, Tuesday.
Paul Mantey, the 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Mantey, of route 1,
is a patient at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield where on one day he
underwent an operation for appendicitis. His mother remained with him and is
assisted in his care.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hertz of Weyauwega are visiting
the Chas. Neinas family since Monday. They came up from Weyauwega last Saturday
and are visiting her parents in the town of Lynn and other relatives in Chili.
Mr. and Mrs. Webb Winn, mr. and Mrs. Byrl Winn, with Mrs. Wordell and sons,
the latter of Grand Rapids, left here by auto for Warrens Sunday. Mr. and Mrs.
Webb Winn and Byrl returned home Sunday night while the balance of the party
remained for a week’s visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Kurth and Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Kurth autoed to Marshfield Sunday where Mrs. Wm. Uthmeier joined them
and they continued on to the Wm. Gandt home several miles from there, for a
day’s visit and outing.
Rellie Beecher says he hates to call a man a
thief, but he fellow who helped himself to his potatoes the other night had
better not repeat the performance.
The Mesdames Chas. Wilke, Hale Davis
and Leonard Cole, with Miss Myrtle Cole, autoeing home from a five day outing at
Waupaca, were caught in Tuesday’s big storm at Auburndale and had some roads
from their home. They arrived here quite O.K. though, at 8 p.m. that day.
Bernard Prange, the 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Prange, who suffered
an injury to both hands four weeks ago in an unexpected dynamite cap explosion,
came up and had Dr. Murphy give the injured fingers their last professional
dress, Tuesday. The lad lost several fingers at the first joint, though all are
nicely healed now.
Members of the Granton unit of the County Council of
Defense are busy since Wednesday canvassing the village and close proximity with
the food pledge cards which it is hoped every woman and every cook who has
charge of a household in this section, will sign. Our country needs the help of
its women during this war and all patriotic women must be willing to do whatever
they can to help their government. There are no fees or dues to be paid. If you
have been missed with a pledge car, you may secure same from any of the advisory
committee composed of the Mesdames Fred hart, P.J. Kemmeter, A.J. Knorr, Otto
Henze, Edward Schroeder, Mrs. E.R. Wonser. It is hoped that theres cards may all
be signed yet this week.
