Erickson, Edward A. (1 November 1910 - 13 September 1967)
Edward A. Erickson, 56, former Merrillan resident, died September 13 at the
Veterans Hospital, in Madison following a heart attack. Mr. Erickson was born in
Merrillan November 1, 1910, to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Erickson. He attended the
Merrillan schools and was graduated from Merrillan High School in 1930.
He was employed as bookkeeper by the Pagel Construction Company of Almond in
Merrillan, and later in Almond, where his family lived for many years.
During World War II he was a staff sergeant in the air force and served in
England. As a member of the reserves he was called to active duty during the
Korean Conflict. While in service he suffered a heart attack and was
hospitalized in Texas for many months. Because of his failing health, Mr.
Erickson found it necessary to move to Zephyr Hills, Fla., where he had since
resided. For the last several years he had been employed as scale man for the
Evan Fruit Company of Zephyr Hills.
While visiting relatives in Merrillan and Garden Valley in August, he had
another severe heart attack and was hospitalized in Black River Falls for 10
days, and then was transferred to the Veterans Hospital in Madison. The day he
entered the hospital at Madison he suffered a stroke and a fatal heart attack.
Services were held in the Almond Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the
Rev. Huntley C. Lewis officiating. Mrs. Paul McLarnun sang, “How Great Thou
Art,” and “The Old Rugged cross,” with Mrs. Harvey Ammel as organist.
The remains were brought to the Merrillan Methodist Church for a second service
at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Calvin Carey officiating. Mrs. Beulah Erickson
sang, “How Great Thou Art”, and “What a day that will be,” accompanied by Mary
Holmgreen.
The Almond American Legion Post attended in a body and served as pallbearers.
Burial was made in West Garden Valley Cemetery, near Alma Center, where the
Almond Legion held Military rites.
Attending the Almond service from here were Lydia Erickson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Linder and Alvina Linder of Merrillan and Rev. and Mrs. Rott of Hancock.
Attending the Merrillan services from outside the county were Mr. and Mrs.
George Erickson and son of Baraboo, and Mr. and Mrs. John Burchell of Humbird.
