Syth, Ruby (Life as a Teacher - 1967)
A veteran of 25 years of teaching, who describes herself as “one of those
old-timers,” is Mrs. Ruby Syth. A graduate of the old teachers’ training
department of Neillsville High School, she is in her first year here as a first
grade teacher.
Mrs. Syth has had considerable experience in rural and state graded schools of
the Willard and Greenwood areas, where she is well-known; but her first year of
teaching was put in at the Mound School, northwest of Neillsville in the Town of
Pine Valley.
She started teaching at the age of 17, and suggests, “I wonder now if some of my
pupils didn’t know more than I did” at the time. She spent a year at Mound
School and three at Eaton Center State Graded School before marrying and taking
time away from teaching to raise a family. She resumed teaching when her oldest
children were in high school.
While teaching in rural schools in the Greenwood area, she attended summer
sessions and enrolled in extension courses offered through Wisconsin State
University-Eau Claire.
“I really miss the fine folks of Willard and Greenwood,” she remarked; “but I’m
beginning to get acquainted with some very good people in the Neillsville area.
I like my first graders and I hope they will like me.”
