Elmira M. Mattes, 93, Thorp, passed away on Tuesday , Oct. 30, 2012, at Our Lady
of Victory Hospital, Stanley. A memorial service was held at 11 a’m’, on Friday,
Nov. 2, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp. Rev. Paul Bittner officiated.
Burial of cremains followed in Sylvan Cemetery in the town of Reseburg.
Elmira Mildred Kuester was born on Jan. 26, 1919, in the town of Warner, Clark
County, the daughter of Fred W. and Alvina (nee Brandt) Kuester. She was
baptized and confirmed at Immanuel United Church of Christ, was raised on the
family farm and received her education in the town of Warner, rural Greenwood.
She married Philip C. Mattes on April 27, 1938 at Immanuel United Church of
Christ. They moved to Thorp, where they owned and operated Mattes Livestock Sale
Barn. She also ran the restaurant at the Sales Barn, every Monday, for many
years, and also cooked for hundreds of people at the annual horse sales every
year. She was known for; and everyone loved her homemade pies. Her home was open
to all, and many relatives spent their summers visiting Thorp. After retiring,
Elmira loved to spend time traveling. Her husband, Philip, died on Aug. 13,
1982. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church nd the Clark County
Homemakers.
Elmira is survived by two children, Philip O. (Diane) Mattes, Thorp, and Jean
(Daniel) Winger, Cadott; eight grandchildren, Michele (Richard) Price, Laura
(Tom) Schleicher, Marsha Mattes, Michelle Mattes, Paul Winger, Mark Mattes,
Martin Mattes, and Michael Mattes; three great-grandchildren, Victoria (Jeff)
Flashinski, Alexandria Price and Nathan Price; one great-great-granddaughter,
Azalea Price; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip; two sons, Marlyn
Mattes and Donald Mattes; one grandson, Philip J. “Fred” Mattes; five brothers,
Eddie, Erwin, George, Arthur and Elmer Kuester; and three sisters, her twin
sister Elvera Briski, Norma Ebert and Lily Kuester.
