George Sevenson has the job of section foreman at Hatfield. He has rented his
house to Newt Peaslee.
Mrs. E. Keenan spent Tuesday and Wednesday at New London.
Quite a little excitement was in our town last week by the appearance of a white
slave trader. He came from Pittsville here and went on to Babcock. He passed as
an agent for a Milwaukee paper and went around saying he was trying to get
subscriptions, although he showed no sample copy. At each house he managed to
get in conversation with the girls offering a large salary if they would go with
him and collect. He was run out of town by a constable who flourished a set of
hand cuffs and revolver. The next day a detective was here on his trail who said
it was well for the small towns to look out for such fellows, as he only visited
the small places where the girls are more easily deceived, as they are not
enlightened of the ways of the world.
Mrs. John Cavanaugh fell last week, breaking her arm and dislocating her wrist.
Miss Frankie Bailey who dislocated her knee is recovering and is taking
ostepathic [sic] treatments.
Frank Hiles had a valuable fat hog run over and killed by the two o’clock train
last Saturday.
