Another Chance to Build Roads
Clark County Board of Supervisors Votes to Resubmit Bond Issue to People on
April 5
Clark county voters, having recently turned down by a bare 100 votes a proposed
$2,300, 000 bond issue for the purpose of building a concrete highway system,
will have another road proposition, this time in modified form, before them at
the spring election April 5, following action of their board of supervisors in
special session at Neillsville yesterday afternoon.
For $1,680,000
The new bond issue on which the voters will decide is for $1,680,000, calling
for the building within the next seven years of 104 miles of standard with
concrete highway. The board voted, 34 to 16, with two absent, to put the
proposition before the people. It is said that sentiment is about the same as
before, many residents of the county holding opinions that the bonded
indebtedness of $630,000 for the building of an asylum is too great to warrant
further large expenditures.
If the bond issue should receive the endorsement of the people, it is likely
that the first year’s work would be the concreting of Highway 16 from Abbotsford
to Withee, which is about 15 miles. Further road building would include concrete
on Highway 13 from a mile south of Abbotsford north to the county line, concrete
from Fairchild southwest to the count line, a stretch on old Highway 18, Highway
73 from Neillsville to Withee and Highway 167 from Withee to Stanley.
To Get Contracts
Contracts for a large share of the work which will soon make Highway 10 solid
concrete from Merrill to Portage will be let at the Stevens Point court house on
Thursday, March 3, according to Divisional Engineer F. F. Mengel, whose offices
are located here. Night and day shifts are now at work at the central offices
her mapping out the proposed concrete work.
