Free, Alex (20 DEC 1860 - 7 JUL 1885)

(Note: Birth date taken from Neillsville City Cemetery listing)

Alex Free of Neillsville (Clark Co., Wis.) was drowned in Black River about a mile above the railroad bridge in this city Wednesday afternoon. He was employed in putting in logs on the river and was engaged with a gang of men in breaking a log jam that had formed from the rocks in the middle of the river just opposite the iron mine to the west bank. He and a younger brother fell in at the same time and struggled in the water together for some minutes. The younger man was soon rescued, but Alex seemed to have had a cramp in his right arm, and his strength seemed to utterly desert him; he sank helplessly beneath the surface and did not rise again. His body was recovered a short distance from where it went under. It was brought to the city and carried across the country the same afternoon to Neillsville, where two brothers and the mother of the deceased reside. He was about twenty-two years of age.

Driving Logs down the river was the most dangerous job for loggers.
