Neff, Alvira (19 November 1893 - 26 October 1967)
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the United Church of Christ
for Mrs. Charles (Alvira) Neff, 73, of Neillsville who died here Thursday. The
Rev. W. C. Koehler officiated at the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial was made in the
Neillsville City Cemetery.
Mrs. Neff, the former Alvira Hemp, was born November 19, 1893, near Greenwood.
She was the daughter of the late Adolph and Ellen (Christie) Hemp. She moved
with her parents onto a farm near Neillsville when she was about four years of
age. She was a graduate of the Neillsville High School class of 1911. The summer
following her graduation she attended summer school in Oshkosh. In September of
1911 she began teaching, a profession she followed for six years.
On October 11, 1917, she was married to Charles Neff. They farmed in the Town of
Levis until 1951, when, they moved to Neillsville. She was a member of the
United Church of Christ and the Women’s Guild. For many years before her
marriage she was organist at the former E and R Church. Much of her time in
recent years was devoted to working with the Hospital Auxiliary and the Thrift
Shop.
Mrs. Neff is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Manthey of Portage;
a son, Charles, Jr., on the home farm. Surviving grandchildren are Darrell,
David and Donna Manthey and Kathy and Joby Neff.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Georgas Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were: Carl Sternitzky, Herman Dahnert, Kenneth Kren, John C. Brandt,
Edison Mathias and Warren Hake. Mrs. Heron Van Gorden sang, “Beyond the sunset”
and “Under His Wings,” accompanied by Mrs. Jack Grether.
People from out of town here for the service were: Mrs. Jane Manthey, Darrell
and Donna of Portage; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hemp of Mosinee; Mrs. Margaret Maas
and Mrs. Ann Page of Marshfield; Mrs. Elmer Kapfer of Granton; and Sam Grap of
Greenwood.
