Janes, Joseph Alonzo
(10 NOV 1845 – 23 JAN 1914)
Joseph Alonzo Janes of the town of Sherwood, one of Clark County’s pioneers
answered the final summons last week Thursday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in
Marshfield where for a number of weeks previous he had been under treatment for
a complication of diseases.
Mr. Janes was born at Callicoon, New York, November 10th, 1845 and
came to Wisconsin when but a young man.
On July 3rd, 1868 at the age of 22 years he was married to
Miss Henrietta Ellis and forty years ago they moved from Plainfield and settled
on the farm in Sherwood which has since been their home.
He is survived by his wife and five
children, namely; Edward L. of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Fred Ziemendorf, of McDill,
Mrs. John Clark, David and Miss Flora, all of the town of Sherwood, together
with 13 grandchildren. Mr. Janes
was a veteran of the civil war enlisting as a corporal in Co. E. of the 7th
Wis. Vol. Inf. At Eagle Point on Feb. 15, 1864, and serving until the close of
the war when he was honorably discharged.
The funeral was held from the Sherwood town hall Sunday afternoon, a Miss
Whipple who is holding a series of religious meetings at that place conducted
the services. Internment was made
in the Sherwood cemetery and the remains of one of the towns most respected and
beloved citizens laid to rest in the bosom of old Mother Earth.
The sympathy of the entire countryside goes out to the bereaved family in this great loss.
