In the same gymnasium where for the last 14 years she has taught Greenwood
children to stay fit and have fun doing it, Bonnie Weyer was recognized Monday
night for her work.
Weyer received the Greenwood Board of Education’s sixth annual Teacher
Recognition Award at the annual district meeting.
Board member Dr. Russell Dean presented the award. Dean commended Weyer for
introducing life sports to the Greenwood Elementary physical education
curriculum. Since joining the Greenwood staff in 1978, Weyer has added programs
on athletic activities children can use after their school years, such as ice
skating, bicycling, and cross country skiing.
Weyer each spring coordinates a fifth grade bicycle riding trip to a state
riding trail, and also runs a “Jump Rope for Heart’ program through the American
Heart Association.
In presenting the award, Dean said, “We thank all of our teachers and support
staff for the job they are doing with our kids. And tonight we thank especially
as 1992 teacher of the year Bonnie Weyer for the outstanding job she has done
with our kids.”
“We appreciate Bonnie Weyer,” Dean continued, “for teaching our kids to be tough
competitors, for teaching our kids to play and work cooperatively, for
introducing our kids to life sports, for showing our kids and us by your
teaching and by your personal example that fitness is fun.”
Weyer thanked the district administration for supplying the equipment necessary
for her life sports curriculum and fellow staff members for their cooperation.
Weyer received a desk clock and plaque, and a gift certificate for being named
recipient of the sixth outstanding teacher award. Weyer succeeds district media
specialists Earl Adams and Marilyn Ramseier, who earned the honor last year.
Other past recipients include learning disabilities teacher Darlene Bucheger in
1990, junior high math teacher John Binder in 1989, reading specialist Emily
Fijalkiewicz in 1988, and junior high science teacher Harry Channing and fifth
grade teacher Jerry Hamm in 1987.
