Stanley Boy Drowns

Michael M. Haas, age 12, North Broadway Street, Stanley, became the first drowning victim in Chippewa County for the year when he lost his life while swimming at the beach of Chapman Lake at Chapman Park, in Stanley shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.

The Stanley Police chief, David Elver, reported today that Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melbourn Haas, was swimming with his brother and two other boys about his age, when they noticed he had disappeared in the water.

Elver said the boys used a telephone in the park which is directly connected with the Stanley Memorial Hospital to report Michael was missing. Chief Elver said he and other officers were at the park within three minutes from the time the report was given to them, and they recovered the boy's body about 50 yards from the high dive in about 11 feet of water.

Chief Elver said he was unable to question Michael's brother or his companions after the drowning as to what happened as they were "too upset to talk."

Michael M. Haas

Michael M. Haas, age 12, drowned Sunday evening at Lake Chapman in Stanley. He was born Feb. 15, 1962, in Stanley, the son of Melburn and Bernice Haas. He grew up in the Stanley area and attended Holy Family Catholic School, where he was in the sixth grade.

He is survived by his parents; six brothers, Roger, Chicago; Keith and Ronald, River Falls; Gale, with the US Air Force in Thailand; and Terence and Patrick, Stanley; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Judith) Kyle, Ellsworth; and Pamela, at home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Haas, Rt. 3, Stanley; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Johanna LaMarche, Stanley.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth, who died in service in Viet Nam.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Stanley, with Father Leonard Kaiser officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Stanley.

Friends may call at the Plombon Funeral Home, Stanley, after 2 p.m. Wednesday until time of services Thursday. The Sixth Grade from Holy Family Catholic School will recite the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and the parish vigil will be at 8:30 Wednesday at the funeral home.
