Stanley Boy Drowns
Michael M. Haas, age 12, North Broadway Street, Stanley, became the first
drowning victim in Chippewa County for the year when he lost his life while
swimming at the beach of Chapman Lake at Chapman Park, in Stanley shortly before
10 p.m. Sunday.
The Stanley Police chief, David Elver, reported today that Haas, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Melbourn Haas, was swimming with his brother and two other boys about his
age, when they noticed he had disappeared in the water.
Elver said the boys used a telephone in the park which is directly connected
with the Stanley Memorial Hospital to report Michael was missing. Chief Elver
said he and other officers were at the park within three minutes from the time
the report was given to them, and they recovered the boy's body about 50 yards
from the high dive in about 11 feet of water.
Chief Elver said he was unable to question Michael's brother or his companions
after the drowning as to what happened as they were "too upset to talk."
