Brotherton, Alvin (? - 05 JAN 1883)
Originally published in the Colby Phonograph, Wednesday, January 2, 1883
Alvin Brotherton, working in his brother’s camp six miles east of this place
last Friday morning, cut down a large tree which became entangled in the crotch
of another tree in such a manner as to cause it to check back.
In its backward course it caught Brotherton and hurled him to the ground.
When picked up it was discovered that one arm had been taken completely off
above the wrist joint and the other at the elbow joint, both hands lying several
feet from him. Also a large hole had been made in one groin.
A man was put on a horse and sent posthaste after Doctor Grivelly, who hastened
to the side of the injured man, but soon discovered that he was beyond the reach
of human aid.
The doctor did everything he could to make the injured man as comfortable as
possible.
On Saturday morning Brotherton died in great agony.
The funeral was held at the M. E. church with Rev. Chalfant officiating.
Note: Birth information was not originally published. This edition of the
Phonograph was published on Wednesday, the 2nd of January, 1883, and death
occurred on Saturday, the 5th of January, 1883. An entry for Alvin Brotherton is
listed at Colby Memorial but cannot be verified because of missing birth/death
dates.
