Herman “Butch” Carl, 89, of Neillsville died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Memorial
medical Center in Neillsville.
Herman Arthur Carl was born Dec. 12, 1923, at home on South mound in
Neillsville, the son of Gustave and Lillian (Dux) Carl. He attended South Mound
School and graduated from Neillsville High School. After his graduation, he
helped on the family farm and also had his own milk route, which was the first
in the area to include a bulk tank.
He was united in marriage to Berdella Seelow Nov. 2, 1946, at the Zion Reformed
Church in Neillsville. They shared 66 years united in marriage. Butch eventually
moved away from farming and sold his milk route to Arlo Lawson and Earl
Magnuson. He then worked road construction for three years before opening Butch
and Berdella’s Tavern on Sixth Street in Neillsville. They owned the tavern for
14 years before selling it to Mel Mueller. Butch then spent a few years driving
semi-truck, hauling gas, for his son Robert before being hired at Sunburst Youth
Homes. He spent 17 years transporting youth for until it closed its doors.
Butch was a charter member of the Neillsville Men’s Club and a past member of
the Neillsville Lions Club. Along with a passion for playing cards, he and
Berdella enjoyed wintering in Arizona for the past 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Berdella, and three children, Eugene August (Linda)
Carl of Phoenix, AZ, and their twin daughters, Brittany and Breanna; Roger Wayne
Carl of Neillsville and his sons Brandon (Heather) Bodendorfer and their
daughter, Arianah; and Bradley Acker and Wendell Gustave (Sherry) Carl of Boca
Roton, FL, and their children, Andrew Carl and Nikki (Jayson) Hartmon, and their
children, Jacob and Stella. Butch is also survived by three sisters, Eilean
(Robert) Berg of Fresno, CA, Jeanette (Tony) Perushek of Neillsville and Evelyn
Mitte of Neillsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Florence.
