S. A. COOK, merchant, Unity, was born in
Canada, Jan. 28, 1849, and with the rest of the family moved to
Wisconsin, on a farm in Calumet County. In 1864, he enlisted in the
2nd Wis. Cav. was mustered out in 1865, and returned home. In 1866,
he took a trip around the States, looking for a homestead, but
returned to Fond du Lac and opened a livery stable. Leaving this,
he worked in the woods and in saw mills and then, with a capital of
$400, he opened a store in Unity in 1873. He now carries $8,000
stock, and does a business of $50,000 a year, having a branch store
at Abbotsford Junction is also interested in lumbering. In 1876, he
married Miss Jennie Christie, of Calumet County. They have two
children, Maud and Harry. Mr. Cook has been Treasurer of the town,
and Notary Public, and is one of the charter members of the I. O.
O. F. here. Miss Maggie Christie is one of the family, and has a
millinery store.
