In 1872 John Lansworth moved his young family to a 160 acre farm in Section 14
of Mayville Township, near the Village of Dorchester in Clark County, Wisconsin.
During the time he lived there he is recorded as having been a member of the
Baptist Church and the Sons of Temperance Lodge, and from 1879-1880 he served as
the elected Town Treasurer.
John Lansworth was born November 10, 1842, in what 6 years later became Racine
County in the State of Wisconsin. He grew to manhood there and was by trade a
farmer. At age 22 he enlisted in Company C, the Norway Bear Hunters, of the 15th
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry - the famous Scandinavian Regiment raised and led
by Colonel Hans C. Heg to fight in the American Civil War.
John was mustered into the US Army at the rank of Corporal. In 1862 he served at
Island No. 10 on the Mississippi River, and fought in the bloody battles of
Perryville, Kentucky, and Stone River, Tennessee. In 1863 he was promoted to the
rank of Sergeant and fought and was shot in the ankle at Chickamauga, Georgia -
the second bloodiest battle of the entire war.
Sergeant Lansworth recovered from his wound in time to take part in General
Willian T. Sherman's 1864 Atlanta Campaign, during which he fought in Georgia at
Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Pickett's Mill, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro,
and at Lovejoy Station. These battles led to the fall of Atlanta, Georgia, which
played an important role in helping Abraham Lincoln win election to a second
term of office as US President. Lincoln's reelection guaranteed that the
national government would continue the war until the Confederate States of
America surrendered and agreed to come back into the Union.
A few months after the fall of Atlanta, Company C was mustered out of service at
Chattanooga, Tennessee, upon the end of its soldier's 3 year commitment.
John Lansworth returned home to Racine County in early 1865. Later that year
John married Miss Susan Moirland of Dane County, Wisconsin. They began a family
that eventually grew to include 6 daughters: Ida J. Lizzie B. Annie L. Louella
A. Mabel A. and Cora Alma. Some of these girls were born in Clark County.
