ANTONE SCHAFER, hotel, Spencer. Born in
Germany, March 14, 1855. Came with his parents to Hartford,
Washington Co., where he stayed until he was thirteen years of age,
when he learned his trade, that of shoe making. He then went to
Calumet County, where he worked on a farm, and going to Sherwood
(Clark County), worked at his trade then to Marshfield, where he
opened a shop with $35, to begin with, and when he sold out five
years afterward, he had $1,750. He then came to Spencer, and bought
the Brock House. In 1878, he married Miss Carrie Schmidt, of
Marshfield. They have one child, born Oct. 24, 1879. Mr. Schafer
and wife belong to the Catholic Church.
