JOHN POPE, a farmer residing on section 16, Grant Township, Clark County, was born in England, September 3, 1833. His early educational advantages were limited and he attended school only one winter in all before the age of twenty-five. He was the eldest boy of five children, and was nineteen years old when he came to America with his parents, who remained in New York State a few months and then moved to Ohio and stayed there some two or three years. They next moved to Cook County, Illinois. The father came to Clark County, Wisconsin, and bought land.

Mr. Pope, our present subject, was married March 21, 1859, to Harriet Benedict, a native of New York State, and they have had three children. John worked on a farm until the time of his enlistment in the army, which occurred in the month of August, 1862. He enlisted as a private in Company E., One Hundred and Thirteenth Illinois Infantry, and during his service made some long and difficult marches, which broke down his constitution. He was detailed for some months to take care of the sick and wounded, which services were much appreciated by his fellow comrades. He was discharged at Memphis, Tennessee, in June, 1865, for the reason that his service was no longer required. Returning then to Clark County, he engaged in farming. He is a Republican and one of the prominent citizens of the township of Grant.
