Frederick J. Sheldon
(1839)
Frederick J. Sheldon, of section 27, township 28, range 2 west,
Hixon Township, Clark County, was born in Onondaga County, New
York, October 16, 1839, the son of Frederick Sheldon (deceased) a
native of Connecticut. The father, a cooper and farmer by
occupation, emigrated to Dearborn Township, Wayne County, Michigan,
settling fourteen miles west of Detroit, where Frederick lived
until after the war. He served in that struggle, in Company B,
Second Michigan Volunteer Infantry, three years, and was in all the
battles from First Bull Run to that of the Wilderness and North
Anna, including Spottsylvania Court House, second Bull Run,
Fredericksburg, Manassas Junction, Vicksburg, Jackson, Knoxville
and others. His regiment made a charge on a redout at Knoxsville,
and lost ninety-six men in fifteen minutes They participated in
twenty-five battles and many skirmishes, Mr. Sheldon having served
in all but one. He was wounded in the face at Knoxville.
After the war, in July, 1865, he entered the United States employ
as a carpenter, and worked at Nashville, Tennessee, eleven months,
or until June 1865, when he returned to Michigan. He lived in
Dearborn until July, 1867, when he went to Fulton, Illinois, and
December 10 of the same year to Big Falls on Popple River, this
county, settling one and one-half miles southwest of Longwood,
where he has since resided. The first winter he was engaged in the
pineries, and in July, 1868, he brought his family to this county,
taking a homestead on the southeast quarter of the southwest
quarter of section 27, Eaton Township, now Hixon. He still owns 160
acres of this tract, fifty of which is cleared.
Mr. Sheldon was married at Saginaw, Michigan, November 18, 1864, to
Ellen E. Clark, daughter of Brenton Clark, of Wheatland, Michigan.
They had six children, four of whom survive: Willie A., Albertis,
Frank L. and Nancy M. The eldest son is married and lives in White
Sulphur Springs, Montana. The mother died September 22, 1888 she
was a faithful Christian woman, an affectionate wife and tender
mother. Mr. Sheldon has held the office of Justice of the Peace
three years, School Clerk many years, and Town Treasurer six years.
He is a member of the G.A.R. and I.O.O.F. fraternities.

Responses, etc:
I'm thinking they are both buried in the Greenwood Cem. The sexton says Fred died in 1888 and they have no record of the son and his wife being buried there, but we have a photo of the military tombstone and know that he was because the VGR says he was and died 24 Oct 1928. The Obit says 1903, but which Frederick??? This doesn't fit either the sexton's record or the VGR. I'm thinking they purchased a lot in 1888 and Fred Sr. was buried there in 1903. Then, in 1928, Fred Jr. was also buried there..........but, to prove it!!!
Well, perhaps the cemetery record is right because Fred Sheldon, Sr. was dead in 1891, so the 1903 obit cannot be his.

west, Hixton Township, Clark County, was born in Onondaga County,
New York, October 16, 1839,the
son of Frederick Sheldon (deceased) a native of

So, I’m guessing the 1888 date if for Anna and that his father is not buried in Greenwood? And Fred Sr. died in 1903 as in the obit above. From some old record in your office, we had a birthdate for Fred Sr. of 1799. Maybe it was in that book someone found about 2 yrs. ago. I think maybe Bud Brown had had it? At any rate, I'm thinking all three are buried in Greenwood, the father, the son and the son's wife.
There seems to be a reference to Fred Sr. in the old Greenwood History:
"In Greenwood’s earliest days, there was no regular dentist, but persons suffering with toothache, if they wished, could go to "Old Sheldon's" near Longwood and have the tooth removed. He was always found in his bare feet and pulled the tooth with a pair of pliers. This same Sheldon planted many pine trees along the main road near Longwood...." adapted from The Greenwood History 1853-1934
