Fred J. Vine was born in Buffalo, N. Y., in 1844, where he lived until he was twenty years of age, then he came to the town of Grant, where he now resides. He was married to Miss Mary Buss in 1864. He is one of the oldest residents of this part of the county, and came here without any capital to start with. He has been engaged in farming and lumbering' and almost exclusively in farming for the pas five years. He has a large farm of 280 acres, almost one hundred of which is improved. He makes a specialty of sheep and cattle raising. Mr. Vine has been town clerk of his town on the county board for the past three years. He is the postmaster at Pleasant Ridge, and is also President of the Lynn Mutual Fire Insurance Company, which position he has held for ten successive years. FRED J. VINE was born in Buffalo, New York, November 10,
1844, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Vine, natives of Sussex County,
England, who came to America in 1844 and located in Buffalo. Mr.
Vine was the youngest of their family of four children. He received
his education in the public schools of his native city, attending
school in the winter and working in the summer time. Upon starting
out in life Mr. Vine had little or no capital save a willing hand
and a determination to succeed. He came to Wisconsin in 1864 and
located in Clark County, where he bought forty acres of land that
by hard work he reclaimed from the wilderness. As the years went by
he prospered in his undertakings and is now the owner of a half
section of land, sections 9 and 16, in Grant Township. This is
located five miles from Neillsville.
Mr. Vine was married in Buffalo, in 1864, to Mary Buss, who was
born June 1, 1844. Her Parents were also natives of England. They
have seven children: Etta A., Arthur, Fred, Elsie, Frank, George
and Edna. All have received a liberal education in the district
schools and in Neillsville, and for three years Elsie has been a
teacher. Politically Mr. Vine is a Democrat. He favors the
public-school system, but believes that parents should control the
education of their children. He has been Chairman of the Town Board
for three years, and for sixteen years served as Town Clerk of his
town, and as Postmaster of Pleasant Ridge ten years and has been
Secretary of the Clark County Fair Association, and is President of
the Lynn Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He is engaged in general
farming and stocking, making a specialty of fine sheep, which he
imports. He is a member of the A. O. U. W. That he is regarded as
one of the representative citizens of his county is attested by the
fact that he is the present nominee of his party for the office of
County Treasurer.
