Esch, Samuel Henry (26 Jan 1859 - 11 Apr
1900)
SAMUEL H. ESCH, physician and surgeon, has
been engaged in the practice of his profession in Neillsville since
1885. He is a native of Sparta, Monroe County, born in the year
1859, and is a son of Rev. Henry Esch, an early settler in the
county. When he was a lad the family removed to Milwaukee, the Rev.
Esch having been appointed to the pastorate of a church in that
city. Later they left Milwaukee and lived in several different
places, as the father's work necessitated. During a period later on
they again resided in Milwaukee, but when Samuel H. was thirteen
years old they returned to Sparta. There, young Esch took a course
in the high school, and while yet a youth determined to adopt the
medical profession as his calling in life. At that time he evinced
his strength of character and courage, for the family finances did
not warrant anything more than an ordinary education. He was
obliged by the labor of his own hands to earn the means to carry
him through a medical training, and accordingly secured a position
as railroad express messenger, which he held for several years.
Before he began his studies he assisted a brother, John J. Esch,
who was acquiring a legal education at the Wisconsin State
University. This brother, who is now a prominent attorney at La
Crosse, in turn aided the Doctor when he was studying.
The route as express messenger lay between Green Bay and Chicago,
and in the latter city Dr. Esch secured a preceptor who directed
his studies, which he pursued the last year of his employment in
this capacity. He entered Rush Medical College in the fall of 1883,
and was graduated in the spring of 1885. He then located at Sparta,
forming co-partnership with two prominent physicians, the firm name
being Gage, Beebe Co. This relationship existed until his removal
to Neillsville for a time after coming here he was associated with
Dr. W. B. Morely, now of St. Paul, Minnesota. He practiced alone
until May, 1888, when he formed a partnership with D. William
Lyman. By his ability and skill as a physician, and his untiring
industry, he has established a lucrative practice. He and Dr. Lyman
are constantly increasing their patronage, and are ever on the
alert to gain information upon the best methods and latest
discoveries in the science of medicine. Dr. Esch has made a special
study of the eye and ear in connection with his general work.
Our worthy subject was united in marriage in July1886, to Miss
Louise Baldwin, of Sparta, and one child has been born to them,
Gretchen.

Esch, Samuel Henry
ESCH, Samuel Henry, a physician of Neillsville, distinguished for his professional accomplishments and for his personal bearing, is a son of Henry Esch, a farmer and grower of small fruits, who was born in Germany, but came to this country when fourteen years of age, and lived for a time on a farm near Milwaukee. After securing a good education he took up the study of theology, and became a minister in the German Evangelical association. Having followed the clerical profession for some years, he retired from it on account of ill-health and made his home in Sparta, where he carried on a general store for more than twenty years. Disposing of this business, he engaged in farming, devoting his attention of late years more especially to berry-growing. Dr. Esch's mother, Matilda Elizabeth Menn, was born in St. Louis, where her girlhood was spent. She then came to Wisconsin, with her parents, who settled on a farm near Norwalk, Monroe county, where they have since lived. There she met and married Henry Esch. She also is of German descent, and a woman of fine character.
Dr. Esch was born near Norwalk, Wis., January 27th, 1859. He
received his early education in the public schools of Milwaukee,
and afterward attended the schools of Sparta, including the high
school. He then took a course in Rush Medical College, Chicago,
from which he graduated in the class of 1885, and in the fall of
the same year located at Neillsville, Wis., where he has been in
practice ever since. He has for partner Dr. T. F. Conroy, the firm
name being Esch & Conroy. Dr. Esch is the local surgeon of the
C., St. P., M. & O. Ry., and he is also United States pension
examiner and surgeon.
In political affairs he is a Republican, holding to the leading
principles of that party because he believes that they furnish the
best basis of free institutions and not because he is looking after
political preferment. He was elected mayor of Neillsville in 1895,
against sharp opposition, and in the spring of 1897 was re-elected
without any opposition whatever, a very emphatic testimonial to the
efficiency and excellence of his administration.
Dr. Esch is a member of the County and State Medical societies, the
Masonic fraternity, the Foresters and the Maccabees. As to
religion, he is a member of the Congregational church.
He was married July 20th, 1886, to Louise Baldwin of Sparta, and
they have two children: Margareta, born March 12th, 1889, and
Doris, born November 21st, 1892.
Dr. Esch is a diligent student of his profession, keeps thoroughly
informed in its current literature and the discoveries and
improvements therein, and has the entire confidence of the
community where his labors are performed.

It is also important that people are aware that Gretchen's name at birth was Margarita. She changed it for whatever reason. People that are searching might not be aware of the name change. Thanks! Paula Palmer
