----Source: History of Clark County, Wisconsin (1918 by Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge, pg. 402

WILLIAM LIGHTFOOT, one of the best known residents of Pine Valley Township, was born in London, England, May 4, 1846, son of Henry Lightfoot, a sea captain. The father had married in Canada, where two daughters were born to him--Kate and Jenny two sons, Henry, Jr., and William, being born in London. The mother died in 1848, when her son William was 2 years old. Two years after that, Capt. Henry Lightfoot died also. Both were buried at sea, as they died on the ocean. Thus orphaned the child William was sent to live with his grandfather, John Hodson, a Canadian farmer, residing near Quebec, in which country his father had intended to settle when he gave up seafaring life. William remained with his grandfather until he was 15 years old and then struck out for Maine and New Brunswick, spending two winters in the pine woods of that section. In 1868 he then came west to Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., making the last part of the journey, from Sparta, by stage. On arriving here he joined the camp of George Crosby, of which Carl Ayers was foreman, and for thirty-eight years subsequently he worked in the wood camps and on the river, being foreman eight winters. He then took up farming, buying eighty acres in Section 1, Pine Valley Township, which was all wild land. This he has cleared up without the aid of a team and is now conducting a profitable farm.

Mr. Lightfoot has never married. He has had a notable career as pioneer a lumberman and farmer and there are few men better known throughout this part of the county.

Generation 1

1. Henry Lightfoot-1. He died on Abt. 1851 in At sea. He married Elizabeth Hodgson, daughter of John Hodgson and Maria Brown. She was born on 02 Sep 1814 in England?[1]. She died on 26 Aug 1849 in buried at sea, London to Canada[1].

DEATH: her obit, Door County Advocate (Wisconsin) Friday 1 October 1920, p 6 BUR: obit
COMMENTS: much of this info from Joan (Rogers) Reichard's Sergeant-Sargent genealogy, a copy of which is in possession of Ginny Haen. The name seemed to evolve from Sergeant to Sargeant to Sargent.

Children of Henry Lightfoot and Elizabeth Hodgson are:

2. i. Catherine Lightfoot, B: May 1841 in Frampton, Dorchester, Quebec, D: 22 Sep 1920 in Jacksonport, Door, WI, M: 05 Jan 1858 in Dorchester, Quebec[2, 3].

3. ii. Jane (Jenny) Lightfoot, B: 23 Sep 1842 in ,,England, D: 30 Jul 1941 in Fort Collins, Larimer, CO, M: 20 Jan 1870 in Frampton, Dorchester, Quebec.

iii. Henry Lightfoot, B: 14 Dec 1844 in London, England[4], D: See notes.

Notes for Henry Lightfoot:

DEATH: info from his sister, Catherine Sargent's obituary in Door County Advocate, Sturgeon Bay WI (Fri 1 Oct 1920, p. 6). This just says brother Henry was deceased.
CENSUS: 1861, Frampton, Dorchester, Quebec; p.41; (FHL film # 517373): Henry (age 17), b. England, is living with John WHITE (age 57), John HODGSON (age78), Myria HODGSON (age 50), Maria Jane SERGEANT (age 21), Margaret SERGEANT (age 23), and William LIGHTFOOT (age 14). John & Myria (Maria) are married and are probably grandparents of William & Henry whose deceased mother was, Elizabeth (HODGSON) LIGHTFOOT.
POSSIBLE MARRIAGE: There was a Henry Lightfoot living in Detroit MI in 1868 who fit this Henry's description (born England about 1847, parents Henry & Elizabeth- -all fits except birth date is a few years off). He married Annie Wortord (age 17, born Canada) 15 May 1868 in Windsor, Essex, Ontario; she was daughter of William & Ann of Windsor). ----Source: ancestry.com and Genealogical Research Library (Brampton, Ontario, Canada). POSSIBLE DEATH (CENSUS): A Henry Lightfoot, age 26, died in October 1869, killed in a mine (this was coal mining area). He was white, male and married, born England, father & mother of foreign birth, occupation: miner. ----Source: www.ancestry.com database: U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880; this record from 1870, Centralia, Columbia County, PA, P 1, Line 11, Roll M1838_5. Also in same census was Mary A. Lightfoot age 23, female white, occ keeping house, personal property $200, born England, both parents of foreign birth, cannot read or write. Living with her were children Margaret (age 4, born England) and Henry (age 8/12, born October in PA). Two miners also lived in the household: Joseph Williams and Thomas Move/More. Discrepancies here would be Mary A. being born in England rather than Canada and the child Margaret age 4, born England- -since Henry and Annie (Mary A?) were only married in 1868. Also both the Henry who died and Mary A. have aged 5 or 6 years in the 2 years since they were married (not unusual errors in census information). ----Source: www.ancestry.com Database: 1870 US Federal Census Deetail: Year: 1870;

Is it conceivable that while others were moving west from Frampton to settle in Wisconsin and Michigan, Henry only got as far as Detroit, found a wife from across the border in Windsor Canada, then made his way to east central Pennsylvania to find work? More research needs to be done.

Obituary, Neillsville Press (Neillsville, Clark County, WI), 26 June 1930 (on Clark Co website www.usgennet.org/usa/wi/county/clark ):

"William Lightfoot, one of the oldest residents in this locality and who lived alone in his little house on his forty acre farm in the northeast corner of Pine Valley, was found dead inhis bed, June 20, by Arthur Kueng who had come to his house to help Mr. Lightfoot with his chores.

Billy Lightfoot, as he was best known, was born in London, May 4, 1846 and has passed his 84th year at his death. His father was a sea captain, and both is father and mother died at sea and were buried in the ocean.

At the time of their death Billy was only two years old. He with his older brothers and sisters came out to Canada to live with their grandfather. He began to work in lumber camps when 15 years old - - then went to Maine and worked in camp for two years, and from there he came to Clark County and worked in lumber camps for 38 years. For some time he was employed around the old O'Neill House.

He bought and cleared his little farm in Pine Valley and here for many years he had lived alone. He is survived by a sister in Illinois. A niece, Mrs. Pettes of Sturgeon Bay, who occasionally came here to see him was here to attend the funeral which was held Sunday at the Congregational Church, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. The body was taken to Sturgeon Bay, Tuesday for burial by Schiller's ambulance."

Generation 2

2. Catherine Lightfoot-2(Henry Lightfoot-1) was born on May 1841 in Frampton, Dorchester, Quebec. She died on 22 Sep 1920 in Jacksonport, Door, WI. She married Edward Sargent on 05 Jan 1858 in Dorchester, Quebec[2, 3], son of John Sargeant and Hannah Hodgson. He was born on 05 Jun 1834 in Frampton, Dorchester, Quebec[7]. He died on 22 Mar 1893 in Jacksonport, Door, WI[8].

Notes for Catherine Lightfoot:

Birth, death and burial information found in obituary in Door County Advocate, Sturgeon Bay WI (Fri 1 Oct 1920, p. 6). This also states that "until the age of seven she lived in London, England, when with her parents returned to Canada. On the way across the ocean her parents died and were buried at sea." This information is not all correct, as her father did not die at sea at this time. The obit also says she was born in Frampton, Quebec; as was her sister Jenny (info from vital records). Did they live in Frampton, then move back to London, then come back to Canada? Her two younger brothers were born in London in 1844 and 1847 (documented by birth records).

Notes for Edward Sargent: BIRTH: calculated from cemetery record MARR: from his wife's obit

DEATH: records of Jacksonport's Church of the Holy Nativity Episcopal Cemetery, which agrees with his obit information.

The birth order/names of the children were compiled from censuses (1871, 1881, St Edouard, Dorchester, Quebec and 1900 Jacksonport, Door County WI). They did not agree as to first names. Some of the discrepancies may be the switching of first and middle names. More research needs to be done.

Notes for James McNeely:

COMMENTS: a James McNeely died in Wausaukee WI on Thurs 29 Aug 1929 at age 73; see obit from Door County Advocate (Wisconsin) Fri 6 Sep 1929, p 1; is this Henrietta's husband? See census info under Edward McNeely for the Wausaukee James McNeely and family. 1900 census gives his birthdate as May 1859 which fits. At that time he was married to Eliza for 14 years.

Children of Henrietta Morton Sargent and James McNeely are:

i. Edward McNeely, B: Nov 1887 in Michigan or Wisconsin[29].

Notes for Edward McNeely:

Edward McNeely seems to have gotten into some sort of trouble as "Sheriff A.A. Minor conveyed Edward McNeely of Jacksonport to the Industrial School at Waukesha, returning Wednesday morning." (Door County Democrat, Sat 18 Jan 1902, page 1, Personal Column). This followed a note in the Jacksonport column of The Advocate, Sturgeon Bay WI, Sat 4 Jan 1902, "Now a little timely advice to a certain young man who has made himself quite obnoxious to this community: Let him quit his dissolute habits, stop the profane and vulgar talk, add to his

Notes for Harry McNeely:

His obituary also says that he was the "adopted son of John Sargent of Jacksonport" (13 July) and that he was "raised from boyhood by his uncle, John Sargent" (20 July).

Though the first reports of his death indicated drowning, it was later determined that he actually died of heart failure.

Elisabeth Lightfoot, wife of Capt Henry Lightfoot, by her maiden name of Hodgson, of Frampton, Co of Beauce, District of Quebec, and late of London England, aaged 30 years less seven days, died on the 26th day of August on her passage from London, England to this country and was committed to a watery grave on the 26th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine. Witnesses: A (or H) Legge, Thos Hodgson.

Henry was a Master Mariner (Certificate # 89).

6 London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906, Parish of All Saints, Rotherhithe, Borough of Soouthwark, County of Surrey (or Middlesex?). William John Lightfoot, son of Henry & Elizabeth Pike Frampton of Somerset Place was born on 5 May 1847 and baptised on 1 Jan 1848 by Robert Jones. Henry was a Master Mariner. This birthdate is close but not the same as that given in his obituary. I'm inclined to believe this one as William was orphaned at a very young age and his birthdate might have been "misremembered" by his grandparents who raised him. Though I don't understand exactly what the "Pike Frampton" means following Elizabeth's name, the rest of the information matches the birth certificate of brother Henry. Elizabeth and Henry Lightfoot had already lived in Frampton, Quebec Canada where their two daughters were born.
