HERMAN RIEDEL, proprietor of the old Riedel homestead in Section
13, Grant township, is a good representative of the modern American
farmer. He was born in the log cabin built by his father in Section
13, Grant township, Feb. 19, 1864, his parents being Gotlieb and
Helen (Gluch) Riedel, of whom a memoir appears on another page of
this volume. Brought up on a pioneer farm, he had no chance of
pursuing advanced educational studies, but acquired the elements of
knowledge in the district school, which he attended as he was able,
and from an early age he had to make himself useful on the
homestead. This training, however, fitted him well for the duties
of life in the position he has since occupied and he now finds
himself among the prosperous and respected citizens of his
township. In 1908 he took over the home farm, on which he raises
Holstein cattle and a good grade of other stock, also planting the
usual crops with satisfactory financial results.
On June 26, 1912, he was married to Anna Neimetz, and he and his wife have three children: Gertrude, Francis, and Louella.
