Arp, Enid (11 October 1914 – 26 December 1984)

Mrs. Charles Arp, 70, of Tollhouse, California, died at her home on December 26.

Mrs. Arp, the former Enid Smith, was born on October 11, 1914. She received her education in South Bright School. On April 6, 1935, she married Charles Arp. For a short time the couple worked in a saw mill near Glidden where Mrs. Arp was a cook. IN 1937, they moved to California.

In 1945, Mrs. Arp contracted polio and was later confined to a wheelchair for many years. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Surviving her, besides her husband, is a son, Allen, Fresno, California; a brother, Rupert Smith, Canon City, Colorado; and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Kenneth Dyre Sr., of Neillsville area is a sister-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Inez Smith, and a sister, Edith Clouse.

Berggren, William G. (7 March 1911 – 24 December 1984)

William G. Berggren, who played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1930s, died in the hospice unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, on Monday morning, December 24. He last made his home at 314 State St., Neillsville.

The deceased was born on March 7, 1911, in Chicago to Axel and Anna (Engstrom) Berggren. After his education, he played baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization during the 1930s. He then worked as a salesman in the Chicago area for many years. It was during his Chicago stay that he married Bea Wilburn in March 14, 1951, Chicago ceremonies.

In 1965 the family moved to Wisconsin, where he worked as a counselor for several state institutions, including Northern Colony in Chippewa Falls. He retired in 1978. Berggren and his wife had been residents of Neillsville for the past six years.

Surviving him, besides his wife, is a daughter, Lori Berggren, Rochester, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth.

According to the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville, there were no visitations or service for Berggren. The body was to be cremated with a memorial service date to be set.

Dux, William C. (18 August 1899 – 21 December 1984)

William C. Dux, a former bulk oil agency dealer in Neillsville, died on Friday, December 21. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Neillsville Memorial Hospital after being brought from his 319 East Second Street home.

The deceased was born on August 18, 1899, in Neillsville to William and Anna (Reihaut) Dux. He graduated from Neillsville High School and then worked for the Neillsville Bank for several years. He then owned and operated, along with his brother Arthur, the Standard Oil Bulk Agency in the city for several years. He was also employed by the Clark County Highway Department for several years until retiring in 1965.

Mr. Dux never married. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Congregation.

Surviving him ae three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Bert, Art, and Alfred; and three sisters, Martha, Elsie and Agnes.

Mr. Dux, 85, was buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery following Monday afternoon, December 24, funeral services held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Neillsville. Music at the service was offered by Janice Mayer and Sharon Nemitz. The Rev. Donald Buch officiated; pallbearers were Gerald Christie, LeRoy Ludovic, Robert Wetzel, Al Dimeo, Bernard Fox and Ronald Cummings, The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gaulke, Clara (15 May 1891 – 2 January 1985)

Mrs. Clara Gaulke, a Chili area resident for the past 30 years, died on Wednesday, January 2, in the hospice unit of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, she was 93.

The deceased was born on May 15, 1891, in Calumet County to Oscar and Anna (Gother) Franke. She received her education in local schools and then moved with her parents to the Town of Lynn. She was employed in Neillsville and later in Milwaukee, where she worked for a candy company.

On September 30, 1911, she married Otto Gaulke in Milwaukee ceremonies. In 1914, the couple moved to the Town of Fremont, where they operated a dairy farm. They retired in 1948. The couple then made their home in Chili. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran congregation.

Surviving her are three sons, Clarence of Milwaukee, Warren of Green Bay and Edwin of Wayland, Michigan; three daughters, Mrs. Joe (Lorraine) Haas of West Allis, Mrs. Richard (Esther) Uschold of Milwaukee and Mrs. George (Irene) Schecklman of Chili; and a sister, Mrs. Emma Sanger, Neillsville. They are joined by 24 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband (October 18, 1973), a daughter, a brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held on Saturday morning from Christ Lutheran Church in Chili with the Rev. E. T. Keller officiating. Music for the service was offered by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wesley and Carol Wesley. Burial was made in Yolo Cemetery; pallbearers were Greg, Dennis and Pat Gaulke, Richard Reder, Randy Uschold, Gerald Roehl and Brad Schecklman. The Hanson Funeral Home of Marshfield was in charge of arrangements.

Jennings, Roy C. (22 October 1896 – 26 December 1984)

Funeral services for Roy C. Jennings, 88, a longtime Town of Fremont resident, were held on Saturday, December 29. The Rev. Calvin Carey officiated at the Chili United Methodist Church service. Burial was made in the church cemetery; pallbearers were Larry and Rodney Dix, Donald Gardner, Elmer Nelson, Wayne Booth and Harland Meisner. Music at the service was offered by Marilyn Lindow and Sharon Hoyt. The Gilbertson Funeral Home of Granton was in charge of arrangements.

Jennings, whose address was Rt. 1, Chili, died on Wednesday evening at the Howard Jennings home, Town of Fremont. He was born on October 22, 1896, in Rio to Arthur and Alma (Vanderhoof) Jennings. He served in World War I. On December 8, 1926, he married Annabell Dodder in Yorkville ceremonies. The couple lived in Summus until 1938 when they moved to a farm in the Town of Fremont. He was a member of the Chili United Methodist Church and the American Legion.

Surviving him are four sons, Arthur of Oak Creek, Kenneth of Neillsville, George of Conover, North Carolina, and Howard of Chili; and three daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Mery) Crum of Aurora, Colorado, Mrs. Richard (Esther) Veltes of Racine and Mrs. Joseph (Alice) Kirk of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota. They are joined by a brother, Dale, Ripon; a sister, Mrs. Elsworth (Clara) Olson, Racine; 31 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife (November 27, 1983), two brothers and a sister.

Ratsch, Wendy M. (31 July 1962 – 30 December 1984)

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, January 3, for Wendy M. Ratsch, 22, from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Mrs. Ratsch died in a Town of Weston auto accident on Sunday evening, December 30. The Rev. Joseph Henseler of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville officiated at the funeral service. Burial was made in the parish cemetery; pallbearers were Dan Blakey, Tom Rondorf, Greg Murphy, Peter Bretz, Phillip Linsey and Larry Reuter.

The deceased was born on July 31, 1962, in Milwaukee to Raymond and Barbara (Prochnow) Rolfson. She received her elementary education in Milwaukee and then moved with her parents to the Neillsville area. She graduated from Neillsville High School in 1980. She then worked in Baraboo, Wisconsin Dells, Marshfield and Neillsville; the latter included employment at Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

On August 22, 1981, she married Steven Ratsch in Milwaukee ceremonies. She last made her home at Rt. 1 Willard.

Surviving her, besides her husband, are two children, Steven and Kristine; a sister, Tina Kubatzki, Neillsville; three brothers, Brian Rolfson of Menomonie, Charles Kubatzki and Robin Kubatzki, both of Neillsville; mother, Barbara Kubatzki, Neillsville; father, Raymond Rolfson, Texas; stepfather, George Kubatzki, Marshfield; and maternal grandmother and grandfather, Charles and Cecilia Prochnow, Milwaukee.

Rhead, Eunice (10 February 1911 – 1 January 1985)

Word was recently received here that Mrs. Oakley Rhead passed away on January 1 in an Arizona hospital. The Rhead’s spent their winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. In the summer they lived at Millston. Her death was due to a heart problem. Her body was cremated with interment in spring.

The former Eunice Crockett, daughter of Orington and Maud Crocket, was born February 10, 1911, in the Town of Washburn. She attended Carlyle School and then worked in the area until her marriage to Oakley Rhead on October 14, 1933, in Neillsville.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Charlotte) Sutton, West Springfield, Mass.; two sons, Jack of Beloit and Larry of Sun Prairie; and several grandchildren. Joining them are three sisters, Mrs. Max (Irene) Opelt of Granton, Mrs. Melvin (Ella) Hansen of Santa Paula, Calif., and Mrs. Thomas (Avis) Knobel of North Prairie; and four brothers, Allen Crockett of Neillsville, Ray Crockett of Brookings, Ore., Daniel Crockett of The Dalles, Ore., and Robert of Paradise, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruth; and brothers, Clifford, Theron and Verlin.

Romano, Frank (12 September 1916 - 16 December 1984) With Flag

Frank Romano, a highly decorated veteran of World War II, died in Neillsville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, December 16. He was 68 and had been in failing health.

The deceased was born on September 12, 1916, in Milwaukee to William and Rose (Degaro) Romano. He received his education in Milwaukee schools, then worked for railroad companies for several years and at the Midwest Tannery.

He entered the U.S. Army on May 21, 1942 and served in the Pacific Theatre. That effort led to many metals, including the Bronze Star. He was discharged on December 6, 1945.

In September of 1947, he married Minnie Pitt in Milwaukee ceremonies. The couple remained in Milwaukee where he continued employment with Midwest Tannery. In 1968, they moved to the Town of Pine Valley, where they farmed until Romano’s ill health forced retirement. In 1978, they moved to a trailer court in the Town of Grant.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Neillsville American Legion Post.

Surviving him, besides his wife, is a step-daughter, Mrs. Robert (Angeline) Hecker, Milwaukee; four sisters, Annie, Rosie, Anna Marie and Margaret, all of Milwaukee; two brothers, Lawrence and Carlo, both of Milwaukee; a grandchild; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Sam; and a sister, Josephine.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, December 29, from the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville with the Rev. Wally Anderson of Living Hope Evangelical Free Church officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery; pallbearers were Frankie, Dale and Ronald Zank and Mark Kunze.

Schnell, Albert I, (3 March 1911 – 19 December 1984)

Albert I. “Al” Schnell, 7y3, of Alma Center, died December 19, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 3, 1911, in Kendall to John and Phoebe (Mist) Schnell. He married Edith Watenpuhl in Fairchild on Mary 6, 1945. The couple farmed in the Merrillan area for many years and lived in Merrillan from 1958 until moving to Alma Center in 1976. He was employed at the Jackson Box Company in Black River Falls for seven years and at National Presto Company in Eau Claire.

Survivors include his wife; and three sisters, Bertha Butterfield of Thorp, Beula Zunker of Fond du Lac and Viola Gates of Milwaukee.

Services were held Saturday afternoon in Grace Lutheran Church in Alma Center with the Rev. Everette W. Meier officiating. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery in Alma Center. The Jensen Funeral Home at Hixton was in charge of arrangements.

Struble, Lula E. “Lou” (23 September 1892 – 29 December 1984)

Lula E. “Lou” Struble, 92, of 210 E. Fourth St., Neillsville, died on Saturday morning, December 29, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

The deceased was born on September 23, 1892, in the Town of Grant to Warren and Mary (Dows) Page. She received her education in the Kurth School and graduated from Granton High School. She then worked in the Granton Telephone office for several years.

On August 27, 1917, she married Delbert C. Struble in Granton ceremonies. The couple then farmed in the Town of Lynn. In September of 1930, her husband died, and she continued to farm. Later she lived in Janesville, Beloit and Marshfield. In 1945, she returned to Neillsville. She was employed for several years by Kearns Drug Store and Neillsville Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving her is a son, Delbert C. “Bud” Struble, Neillsville, three nieces; six grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Chuck; and two daughters, Chloe and Genevieve.

A memorial service was held on Monday afternoon, December 31, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. The Rev. Howard Ott of the United Methodist Church officiated. The body was cremated with interment slated for the Neillsville City Cemetery at a later date.
