My Mohr
Family
I have been asked to tell a bit about my ancestors. My great grandfather
Andreas Mohr was born in Switzerland, having come to the USA around 1883 to the
Racine area. In 1891 he married Wilhelmina Thelke who was of the Fond du Lac
county area, but was born in Germany. They were married at Rhinelander in Oneida
Co., where some of their children were born. Then in about 1901/2 they moved to
Clark Co. to the Pine Valley area. One of the sons, my grandfather, Christian
married a neighbor girl, Mary Anna Gehrt, daughter of Herman & Emelia Krueger
Gehrt, in 1913. Grandma Mary and her parents were all born in Germany, but
Mary’s siblings were all born in Pine Valley twp. Well then came along my father
Albert and his siblings, Ernest and Agnes. My father was born about ½ mile from
where he lived for about 50 years and he never lived more than a mile from where
he was born, his whole life of almost 86 years.
Then in 1939, my father married a neighbor girl, Luella Mae Kopp, daughter of
Joseph and Mary Siems Kopp. Mother was born in Pine Valley also, and lived
within three miles of where she was born all her life and at this writing she is
still humming right along, nearing 85 years. Well this marriage brought forth 11
children, Dolores (1st Novak) now Kenyon of Washington state, Lois Mendenhall of
Arizona, Harvey of Plymouth WI, Kenneth of Pine Valley, Edna Klatt of Alma
Center WI, Marvin, Allen, David, Paul, & Ruth Schmidt all of Pine Valley area.
The youngest Eunice Artac of the Willard area died in May of 1987 of Cancer. I
believe there are about 30 grandchildren and I do not know how many great
grandchildren. Allen is the Neillsville High School principal at this time,
since 1997.
The first four babies were born at home delivered by a mid wife or a doctor. The
other 7 were born at Neillsville Hospital. My parents were farm folk all their
life, owning many acres in south Pine Valley. Mom always raised a large garden
and had a cucumber patch to sell the cucumbers to a canning factory. She at one
time for a few years had a bean patch for selling the beans to a cannery. They
raised a lot of their own pork for years, and all of their own poultry and beef
for butchering. My father and brothers were avid hunters also. Mom always worked
in the barn, milking, feeding and barn cleaning. She usually was right out there
with the men and boys planting and harvesting also.
All of us 11 attended the Silver Crest School as well as our parents,
grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins on down to second and third cousins. Now
before this gets boring, I will sign off.

Dolores, Kenneth, Lois & Harvey, the children of Albert and Luella Mohr of Pine Valley, Clark Co., WI. This picture was taken about 1945 and shows the water pump on Clark Rd., across from Bert and Jenny Winter's place. Luella said the car in the background was likely a 1932-33 Chevrolet. |
Haying on the Mohr farm in the summer of 1945 with their iron-wheeled wagon. Hay was "pitched" (thrown by pitch fork) onto the wagon. Atop the load is, Ernest and Albert Mohr and on the ground is Albert's children: Harvey, Lois & Kenneth to the left of Grandpa Chris Mohr and Albert's oldest daughter, Dolores is standing to his right. |
