Families--David, William, and Cyrus Researched by
Lani Bartelt "William H.
Nettleton was one of the first settlers in Pine Valley Township, Clark
County, Wisconsin. He was born in 1838 in New York and was twenty-two years old
at the time of the
1860 Clark Co., WI Federal Census. Also recorded in that census were
forty-five year old David Nettleton, a farmer also born in the Empire State,
with real-estate valued at $1,500 and personal assets of $300. Twenty-year-old
David G. Nettleton, was also listed on that record as born in New York."
This was the beginning paragraph of our first biography on William Henry Nettleton. Although several of the Clark Co History Buffs researched and researched these families and William Henry Nettleton there was so much information on the various Nettleton Family members that we were still confused.
As we all know census takers were not always accurate. Listing the older David Nettleton’s birthplace as New York the census taker also lists William and David G Nettleton’s birthplace as New York. I now know that record is incorrect. William Henry and David Crandell Nettleton were born in Ohio. David’s obit is as follows:
Source: HUMBIRD ENTERPRISE (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) 03/25/1916 --------- Nettleton, David C. (9 JAN 1840 - 26 FEB 1916) Died, at Charlevoix, Mich., Feb. 26, 1916, David Crandell Nettleton. He was born Jan. 9, 1840, near Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and resided in Houghtonburg for a number of years. Many of the old settlers (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) will remember him.
(Chagrin Falls is in northeast Cuyahoga Co, Ohio.)
I believe this Houghtonburg refers to the area around Humbird and Mentor Clark Co, WI. where a number of persons with the name Houghton lived in the mid to late 1800’s.The Houghton’s would intermarry with the Nettletons and the Frankenbergs/Frenkenburgs.
I also now believe that William and David C (randell) not G Nettleton were brothers and the older David Nettleton was their father.
Where William Henry and David Crandall Nettleton were ACTUALLY born is still confusing. Some records show NY and others show OHIO. I think it was Ohio. I also believe the migration path for the Nettleton Family was probably from NY to Ohio to McHenry IL to WI with some Nettletons in Clark Co, WI: some Nettletons In Jackson Co, WI: and some Nettletons in Marquette and Chippewa Co. WI at various times and David Crandell Nettleton in Charlevoix, Michigan from 1867 - to his death in 1916.
Nettleton first names include David, (in fact two David C Nettleton) one with middle name Crandell and the other David C with as yet unknown middle name, William Henry, Orlando, Cyrus, Leonard, Elizabeth (in fact several with the name Elizabeth), Mary Ann (Mamie),, and Marietta to name a few and yes, they all do relate!
Now I will begin the Nettleton Family Story -
David Nettleton was born in NY according to all known census records. At this time I don’t know exactly where in NY .In 1850 he and his family were in Alden, McHenry Co, Illinois. There are also Nettletons in Connecticut and Canada that may or may not be related. The census records I have at this time on the two David Nettletons and William Nettleton and a Cyrus Nettleton are below.
1850 Name: William H
Nettleton Age: 12 Estimated birth year: about 1838 Birth place: Ohio Gender: Male Home in 1850 (City, County, State): Alden, McHenry, Illinois Page: 432 Roll: M432_117NETTLETON, David, 36, born in N.Y. , Sarah A., 23, born in N.Y. (Maiden name Sands) , Maryetta, 14, born in OH. , William H., 12, born in OH. , Anna E., 4, born in OH. So from this census record it would look David Nettleton and family started out in NY and by about 1836 they are in Ohio and by 1850 they are in Alden, McHenry Co, Illinois.
I believe the David Nettleton listed on the Clark Co.; WI 1860 Census came with his sons, William and David C Nettleton as early pioneers of Clark Co. What happened to him, after 1870,when exactly he died and, where he is buried is as yet unknown. We do know that by 1878 a Sarah Nettleton is remarried (see below) but I believe she is William Henry Nettleton’s wife, Sarah (Sands) Nettleton.
William Nettleton married Sarah Sand, 14 Apr 1867 in Clark County, WI. Now that record should have the parents names if one would write to the Clark Co. Vital records clerk for the actual record.
I do know that William Nettleton continued to live in Clark Co, WI for a number of years. He is listed as follows on the following Clark Co Census records:
1860 Census
Name: William H Nettleton Age in 1860: 22 Birthplace: New York (Ohio on the image) Home in 1860: Pine Valley, Clark, Wisconsin Gender: Male Value of real estate: View image Post Office: Neillsville Roll: M653_1401 Page: 77 Year: 1860 Head of Household: David Nettleton Household

1870 census:
Name: William H Nettleton Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838 Age in 1870: 32 Birthplace: Ohio Home in 1870: Mentor, Clark, Wisconsin Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Humbird Roll: M593_1705 Page: 469 Image: 265 Year: 1870 Nettleton, WIlliam H., 32, born in OH. he is a wheelwright. , Sarah, 20, born in IN. , Fannie V., 2, born in WI. , David, 56, born in N.Y. , Sarah, 44, born in N.Y. Houghton, Edgar, 25, born in N.Y. , Annie E., 24, born in OH.
David and Cyrus and a Mrs. M.A. Nettleton are on the 1875 Clark Co, WI State Census living in Mentor Note - Whom Mrs. M.A Nettleton listed on this census is I am not sure at this but I am thinking it is the Mary Nettleton listed living with Cyrus Nettleton on the 1880 census below.

David Nettleton must have died between 1875 and 1878 and I have been unable to find any burial records for him in Clark Co, WI so perhaps he is buried in Jackson Co.
His wife, Sarah would remarry (see below) SARAH A. NETTLETON (wife of David; age 56) - Married PETER FREDENBIRG [Fradenburgh]; 30 Sep 1878; Jackson County, Wis Later she would die at the home of her daughter Elizabeth Nettleton Houghton (see below) Source: Clark County Republican Press (Neillsville, Wis.) 08/16/1900
Fredenberg, Sarah (MAR 1826 - 13 AUG 1900)
Mrs. Sarah Fredenberg died Monday morning, Aug. 13, 1900, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. P. Houghton, after a few days' illness. She was here (Neillsville, Clark County) on a visit when she became sick and remained under her daughter's care. The remains were taken to her home at Humbird Monday morning, and the funeral took place there Wednesday. At the time of her death she was seventy-four years and five months old
*Note - This leads me to believe Cyrus and William Henry Nettleton moved to Jackson Co., WI sometime between 1875-1880.

That is what I know to date on William Henry Nettleton I also believe Cyrus Nettleton may have been a brother to William and that is all the information I have on Cyrus at this time.
The younger David Nettleton went to Charlevoix, Michigan in
1876.and his sister, Marietta Nettleton Pope would join him and
they would both live out their lives there.
Since the Nettleton Family is so large I have decided to write
each family biography separately.
Look for a bio on David & Marietta and other Nettletons
