Tony Frank Schiller in 1937 |
T. F. Schiller was the son of Jacob and Margaret (Litzen) Schiller. Margaret was born on May 28, 1855, and Jacob was born on Christmas day, 1851. They were united in marriage Feb. 6, 1876. Eight years after their marriage they moved to a farm in Marion County and then to Neillsville, Clark County. Mr. Schiller was employed by the John Hein Lumber company at its location on Wedge's Creek in the Town of Seif, and later in Heintown, Town of York. Mr. and Mrs. Schiller settled down in a log cabin near Wedges Creek during these first years in the Clark County wilderness. A few years later the Hein sawmill was moved to the Town of York and Mr. and Mrs. Schiller went along with it. Mr. Schiller was a valued employee of Mr. Hein and frequently was sent out in search of new timberlands. After 14 years of this work Mr. and Mrs. (Rose) Schiller moved to Neillsville, where he took over a position with the city water works. It was here that an unhappy accident overtook him. A piece of flying metal lodged in an eye. An operation failed to save the eye and soon blindness came to the other eye.
Jacob and Margaret were faithful members of the Catholic church and had two sons: William Schiller who resided in Neillsville, Tony Frank Schiller (the subject of this sketch) and five daughters, Mrs. Wm. (Della) Betz, Weston Mrs. Ed (Anna) Wolf, Lindsay, Mont. Mrs. Thorwald (Margaret) Christofferson, Juneau Mrs. Frances Preston, at home Miss Mildred Schiller, Madison, WI. Jacob Schiller passed peacefully away on Wednesday morning, July 19, 1939 at 9:00 a.m.
The first furniture and undertaking business in Greenwood was that of Abner Bailey and his son Dorrie who were in the building occupied by a photographer, Lawrence Berg. G. W. Bishop conducted the same kind of business in the building where be lived just north of the Farmer's Store. His was the only one of its kind in town until William Schiller from Neillsville with his brother, T. F. Schiller, opened a branch in the old Fricke building. The business was managed by T. F. Schiller.
Frankenberg and Fricke, for many years sold dry goods and groceries in what was know as the Schiller building. After Mr. Frankenberg moved away the firm was known as Fricke and Rossman. In time they sold out to the Farmers' Co-Operative company, which later discontinued the business. At one time A. S. Eaton also had a tin shop in the Schiller building. Schiller's Store was just north of Mrs. N. J. Carter's millinery shop.
T. F. Schilling belonged to the prestigious Greenwood Commercial Club and was on its board of directors. He was also present for the Banquet held in honor of the unveiling of the Peace Monument given to the city by Ernest Durig in 1937.
Mr. T. F. and Mrs. Schiller had two daughters, Frances and Dora.
