Clark County, Wisconsin Charles Shelley,
of Unity, was convicted of assault with attempt to rape at the present term of
court at Wausau and was sentenced, by Judge Bardeen, to four years in the state
prison. The crime was committed July 19th, 1890; the person was the
eleven year old daughter of Fred Thompson of Unity. The case was before Justice
N. J. White, about a year and half ago, who bound the defendant over to the
circuit court. The defendant is a married man with a family. The report of the
case in the daily papers is somewhat jumbled and reads as follows: "Shelly
Thompson, a married man living at Unity, Marathon county, has been sent to
Waupun for four years for criminal assault upon a 11-year-old girl. He protests
that he is innocent and says he has been plotted against." Source: Colby
