Francis "Frank" Marion Carter was born April 27, 1851 in Granville, Ohio. He married Nancy Jane Turnbull on February 22, 1872 in Clark County, Wisconsin. They had one son, Claude Jay, born in Neillsville on the 29th of November in 1872. Claude married Maude Greene, daughter of Henry W. Greene and Jane Sheets, and they had a daughter named Iliff/Iliss, who married Mauricio De Pages. Nancy was a dressmaker and also owned a millinery shop. They took in boarders and had servants. They adopted their niece, Lida, but she died in 1905. Marian Carter, possibly another adopted child, married Dale Varney.

Francis "Frank" enlisted with Co. "F" of the 49th Wisconsin Infantry on February 21, 1865, serving as a "Drummer Boy" and was discharged May 12, 1865.  He died August 24, 1914 and is buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery.  His widow of Greenwood, WI was listed as his next of kin on his grave registration.

Mr. and Mrs. Francis Carter, their son and his wife, and Lida are all buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Eaton Twp. Clark County, Wisconsin.
