Ebulius was born in Otsego Co., NY, 4 May 1815, the son of David and Olive (Rice) Hartson. His parents are thought to have been the first settlers of Paris, NY. She was born in Newbury, Orange Co., VT, 13 Apr 1815. Ebulius enlisted with Co. E, 41st Wis. Inf., 8 May 1864, serving as a Pvt. with an honorable discharge, 23 Sep 1864. The Hartsons were the parents of Albert A. (b. 1852, Elkhorn, WI), Eveline (b. 7 Dec 1854), Henry Hobart (b. 24 Jul 1856, Newchester, Adams Co., WI) and Maggie (b. 12 May 1869, adopted). The family is listed on the 1860 Census for Trenton, Washington Co., WI, and on the 1870 Census for Marion, Juneau Co, WI, and by the time of the 1880 Census, they were living in Grant twp., Clark Co., WI. Ebulius died 4 Dec 1892, and Mary Ann passed away 1 Dec 1901. Both of them were buried in the Greenwood, WI City Cemetery.

JUSTICE AND HARTSON’S STORE

During the later 1800’s a hardware business was started in Greenwood by David Justice and Henry Hartson.  Mr. Justice was a native of New York.  He came to Wisconsin in early 1859 and to Clark County in 1885, being a resident of Greenwood as of 1887.

Mr. Hartson was a junior member of the business.  He was a native of Adams County, coming to Clark County in 1872.  He taught school in the county for a few years.  After quitting teaching, he was one of the Hartson Brothers who ran the Neillsville and Withee stage line for a few years.

Justice and Hartson became business partners in 1887 when they worked exclusively in the hardware business.  During that time it was quoted as, "They had a large stock of hardware and a very good trade."

Notes

The Clark Republican and Press Date: 2-9-1888

Born - On Sunday evening, January, 29th, to Mr. H. H. Hartson and wife, a son. The benign smiles that illuminate Henry’s countenance speak plainer than words the happiness he feels. He went right down to the store Monday morning and request Mr.. Justice to make a discount of five per cent, on cold sheets, parlor stoves and numerous other things, and although glass has advanced fifty per cent in market, he says their customers shall have the benefit of the old prices.

The Clark Republican and Press, Good Old Days, Date: 14 Aug 1996, pg. 28
