Phillip Rossman, Civil War Soldier

1836 - 1891

Phillip Rossman is also featured in the book, "Civil War Soldiers in the heart of Clark Co., Wisconsin."

Phillip Rossman was born March 4, 1836.  He enlisted in the Civil War August 13, 1864, serving as a Private and was discharged in 1965.  He died January 24, 1918 and is buried in the Greenwood, Wisconsin City Cemetery.  His grandson, Roy Rossman of Withee, Wisconsin was listed as his next of kin on his grave registration.  His son Adolph reported that his father served in a Wisconsin Company and moved to Clark Co., WI in 1871.  The 1885 Wisconsin Veteran's Census indicates Phillip served under the Quartermaster in the 1st Brigade during the Battle of Nashville. That was James Lowry Donaldson, who was a Brigadier General and Chief Quartermaster of the Military Division of Tennessee who managed the armies of Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman.  This unit received high commendations in official reports. At the close of the war, Donaldson was promoted to Major General and Private Phillip Rossman returned to Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Notes

Phillip Rossmann came with parents and grandparents, Ludwig and Johann.  Johann owned a planning mill in Sheboygan county. The family also got involved in real-estate. I may have some pictures of the lumber mill on Rock Creek. I’ll look around. His son Adolph took over the mill from his father for a few years. The mill closed soon after an engine driven mill opened near-by.

Brother, Jacob R. was down in Neillsville and Paul was up in Greenwood. The rest scattered.  Descendents of Adolph Rossmann are scattered around the country. I only know where a few are.  John Klein (relative).
