William was born 2 Mar 1818 in, England. He first
settled in NY, marrying Eliza (b. 1817) and becoming the father of 3
children, Chantha, George, and Elizabeth, before moving to Spring Prairie,
WI and then to Manlius, IL. On 10 Sep 1861, at Marisalles, La Salle Co.,
IL, he enlisted with Co. K, 39th Ill. Inf., the same regiment his
son, George, enlisted with a month later. He reenlisted with the Veteran
Volunteers at Hilton Head, SC on 1 Jan 1864 and was mustered out at Norfolk,
VA on 6 Dec 1865. After the war he moved to Charlestown, WI before settling
in Clark County. He was crippled with rheumatism, which he attributed to
exposure to cold while serving at Deep Bottom, VA. His pension application
describes him as 5’ 8 ˝", 240 lbs, dark complexioned, with gray hair and
black eyes. His enlistment papers indicated a height of 5’ 10".

The Slater farm in Sec. 27, Eaton Twp.,
Clark Co., Wisconsin, 1880 The
Slaters farmed in the SW corner of sec. 27, Eaton Twp. Their neighbors were
Jones Tompkins, B. Fenlason, Thomas Miller, E. L. Newton, George Huntzicker,
John Sythe and William Fricke (also featured in this book). In 1885 Jones
Tompkins, in confirming the validity of William’s pension application, told
Justice of Peace James Hewett, "We have been well and personally acquainted
for 14 years from 1871 and during that time, William Slater has been
afflicted with rheumatism as to entirely disable him and render it
impossible to perform manual labor." After Eliza died 8 Jan 1877, William
left their farm and moved to Neillsville where his friendly nature was
well-known. Shortly after receiving an increase
in his pension from $10 to $21 a mo., he died 1 May 1887, in the presence of
his son George and his daughter, Mrs. Rufnow. His burial was in the
Greenwood Cemetery next to his wife. Civil War Soldiers in the
