Apfel Family
John Legare Apfel was born June 7,
1868. He came here from Rock County, Wis. and married Esther Wright in 1893.
Esther Wright came from Footville, Wis. and was born Feb. 3, 1872. They farmed
in Levis (Clark Co., Wis.) at one time on the farm George Bryan now lives on.
They had one son, Legare John. In later years they sold the farm and moved to a
home on Hewitt Street in Neillsville, where John died May 9, 1950 and Esther
died May 8, 1960. both were buried at Neillsville.
Legare John Apfel was born May 24,
1895. He married Josephine Rouse on Feb. 6, 1919. Josephine was born in
Virginia March 26, 1896. They owned a farm 9 miles southwest of Neillsville in
section 18, across from the Dells Dam Cemetery. They did farming with horses
and had sheep and cattle. Their son, John Legare was born here. They sold the
farm in 1947 and moved to a home on Grand Ave. in Neillsville where Josephine
died of cancer Jan. 5, 1957. Legare then sold that house and built a home in
Hewitt where he retired. Later he sold this house and is now living at the
Memorial Nursing Home in Neillsville.
John Legare Apfel was born in Levis
May 14, 1923. He married Lucille Bertrand Sept. 9, 1950. Lucille was born in
Fairchild, Wis., May 20, 1921. They moved from Hewett to Levis in 1962, where
they bought the home of Frank Mazola; this house at one time belonged to Mrs.
Joseph Cernik, Sr. They had one son, Richard Alex and one granddaughter, Megan
Renee Apfel. Military Service
Benjamin Bacon Crockett served as a private with the 16th ME Infantry. He
