Bird Fields
[Original Photo] The monument for Bird Fields
indicates he died Aug. 30, 1904 @ 65 years, 1 mo., 21 days which would produce a
birth date of July 9, 1839. The Register of Deeds Death Record shows he
died Aug. 31, 1904 and was born in June of 1835 which would say he was 69 years
old. The reverse side of his VGR says, "It is a fair assumption Mr. Fields
would have claimed to be older to receive a larger pension.....the conclusion is
that the record of the monument is more accurate than the County Records which
were originated by a local undertaker." Bird Fields
was the son of Dempsey (b.1810) and Lydia (Tucker) Fields. His wife was Mary
Townsend. This couple had at least one daughter, Ellen who married Charles
Austin. He fought as a private with Co. A,
33rd WI along side his younger brother, Alfred. Bird died Aug. 30 or 31st, 1904 and is buried in the
Levis Township Cemetery.
Family Notes The birth date that I have for Bird is 9
June,1835. I went back and looked on the 1840 census of Randolph County IN,
and there are two males under the age of 5 years. Also I have the birth date
of their sister Talitha, who is next in line and her birth date is 23 March,
1840. Not humanly impossible if Aunt Tal was a premature birth if Uncle Bird
was born in July of 1839 but I would say quite unlikely. 1st Marriage Bird's first marriage was to Lucinda Taylor B. ca
1845 and died ca. 4th or 5th of May,1870. No records to prove or disprove
this. Just family word of mouth. She is not on the 1870 census. Married 24th September,1865, Township of Clifton,
Grant County, Wisconsin. One child of this marriage.-James Harrison Fields 2nd Marriage Mary M. Townsend B.1854-1922. Buried Crystal Lake
Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. Married 22 July, 1873 at Sylvan-Religious
ceremony-Richland County WI Richland County WI Records, Volume 1
