Sketch of James Freeman & Sylvia (Calkins) Sparks James Freeman Sparks
was born July 23, 1818 in Summit, New York to Thomas and Mary (Howe) Sparks.
He was the fourth child and first son of their twelve children. He married
Sylvia Calkins on August 20, 1837. She was was nearly five years older
than her husband and was born September 5, 1813 at Liberty, Sullivan Co., New
York. The couple moved to Plainfield, Wisconsin
in 1869. "Grandma Sylvia" died there, January 23, 1871. Afterward,
James lived with various members of his family for the remaining thirty-one
years of his life and spent much of that time in Nevins, Sherwood, Clark Co.,
Wisconsin because most of his children were living there. He died Jun 1,
1902 and was buried in the
Sherwood Cemetery, Clark County, Wisconsin. Contributors Lloyd D. Pickering &
