William W. & Lucretia (Foote) Salisbury (aka Sallsury, Saulsbury & Saulsbery) Levis Township, Clark
Co., Wisconsin William W. Salisbury
was born May 15, 1818 in the State of New York, the son of Lawrence and Orfa. He moved to Wisconsin in 1847
to farm. In 1861, he enlisted in Union Army of the Civil War as a
Corporal. He was assigned to Company H & I, 16th Wisconsin Infantry and served
two years and nine months. He was discharged as a private with a
disability and resided in Waushara County, Wisconsin. In 1876, he moved to
Clark County, Wisconsin and remained there the rest of his life. William died November 19, 1890 and was
buried in the
Levis
Township Cemetery, Clark Co., Wisconsin. SALISBURY family Benjamin Bacon Crockett

(born 13 March 1836) nee Wilbur
Crockett were married on 22 April 1850 at Lewiston, Maine. Benjamin Crockett
served three and one half years in the Civil War in the 16th Maine
Regiment. On 20 March 1872 he homesteaded forty acres in Washburn Township
section 18 and in 1894 moved to sec 6 in Washburn township. Benjamin and Lucy
Crockett operated the Carlyle Store and Post Office. Lucy nee Wilbur
Crockett died in 1896. On 21 November 1897 the widower

Foote family Levis news items
January 14, 1897: Miss Grace Foote is teaching school in district
one, town of Levis. Miss Reben having resigned.
April 8, 1897: Grace and Blanche Foote commenced teaching school
in district one and four respectively last Monday. June
22, 1897: Grace and Blanche Foote each closed a very successful
term of school in this town last Friday. Mary Salisbury, daughter of
William and Lucretia Foote Salisbury, was born in 1876 in Heloesha, WI. Mary
Salisbury married Albert Hanks on March 15, 1897. Albert Hanks, born c1870, was
the son of Orin and Ruth nee Clark Hanks.
(The Orin Hanks family homesteaded 20 June 1867 in section one of Levis
township.) Albert and Mary nee Salisbury Hanks had two children:
Orin, born in 1901, and Gladys, born and died in 1905. Mary nee Salisbury
Hanks deserted her husband Albert and son Orin and went west with the hired man.
Albert and son Orin Hanks, some time later also moved out west were they later
died. Elnora Wilhelmina Salisbury,
daughter of William and Lucretia Foote Salisbury, married Frank D. Short on 22
March 1891 in Neillsville. The marriage certificate does not list Frank’s
parents, but it is believed that he was Frank DeWillet Short, son of Washington
and Lydia nee Green Short, born 17 February 1859 in "Pine Valley", Clark
Co., WI. The Salisbury farm was located in Levis section 22 and 23 and the J.W.
Short (brother of Frank) farm was located
in Levis section 3 and 4 on the 1893 Plat Map. Frank DeWillet Short rented the
John O’Brien (O’Brien died in 1906) farm
in Levis section 5 and lived there c1910 with "Nancy and a bunch of kids from
her prior marriage" in a common law marriage. Apparently Elnora and Frank
Short were no longer together, perhaps she had died by then. By 1919 when
Frank’s mother Lydia nee Green Short Haner died Frank was living in
Illinois. Frank DeWillet Short died in Quincy, Adams Co., IL on 26 February
1940. His death certificate states that he was the widower of Anna Jump Short.
(No information found on Anna Jump or their
marriage.) May
1, 1917: Clarence Salisbury
(1889-1994) married Bernice, adopted daughter of Dr. James P. Baker
(c1861 –1941). Bernice, born in 1898, was
the daughter of Mrs. Wren who did farm chores. Mrs. Wren broke her leg and
washed only that leg and put the other under a blanket. The Doctor told her he
had never seen such a dirty leg. She said he should see the other one and pulled
off the blanket. Dr. Baker traded a dog for Bernice. Bernice and Clarence
Salisbury (who was crippled) had Genevieve, Bill, Ella, Frances and maybe
Harvey, about eight or nine children all together.
(Cemetery records give Bernice’s maiden name as
"Darling" but no connection to the Darling family could be found.) Census Records 1870 Federal Census - Marion,
