Medbury Herrick & Abigail (Flemming) McFarland

Mentor, Clark Co., WI

 

 

Medbury Herrick McFarland was born March 24, 1836 in Blue Hill, Hancock County, Maine to Jonathan Fisher McFarland and his wife, Pudence (Herrick).  His wife, Abigail was a native of Wisconsin as were their sons, Leroy G. (b. 22 Aug 1872-73), Frank Leslie (b. 7 Nov 1875) and George Medbury (b. 21 Feb 1878 in Humbird, WI).  M. H. and Abigail married at 11 O'Clock, October 5, 1872, in Grantsburg, Burnett Co., Wisconsin.  At the time they were residents of Rush City, Minnesota.  Abigail was the daughter of Uriah and Eliza Ann Flemming and she was born July 14, 1856 in Humbird, Clark County, Wisconsin.

 

Leroy was just twelve years and twenty-four days old when he drowned in Humbird, Wisconsin, September 15, 1885.

 

In 1886, they moved to Port Townsend, Washington and in 1893, to Bremerton, Kitsap Co., Washington.  Initially, Medbury was a blacksmith, but after moving to the west coast, he became a master ship builder.

 

Frank Leslie McFarland married Mary C. Roberts in Snohomish Co., Washington, November 6, 1897.  She was the daughter of Joseph Benson and Mary (Skookum) Roberts and was born in March of 1879.

 

Medbury married a second time, around 1890, to Amorena (b. 1838) in Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington.

 

In 1890, Abigail also married a second time in Snohomish, Snohomish Co., Washingtion, when she became the wife of Preston E. Maddox, who was born February 8, 1863 in Illinois, the son of Preston and Elizabeth Ann (Blankenship) Maddox. 

 

George Medbury McFarland married Anna Hein, August 6, 1902 in Snohomish Co., Washington.  They resided in Bellingham, Washington State.  Robert Hein and Martha Ratzman served as the witnesses and the next day the record of their union was filed by W. M. Ross, County Auditor.

 

Abigail died at the age of fifty-one in Prosser, Benton County, Washington, just two days before Christmas in 1907.  She was buried in the West Prosser (IOOF) Cemetery, Prosser, Benton County, Washington.

 

Medbury died April 11, 1909 at the age of seventy-three and was buried April 13th in the Washington Soldiers Home Cemetery, Orting, Pierce County, Washington.

 

Amorena died in Bremerton, Kitsap Co., Washington.

 

Frank Leslie McFarland died April 7, 1939 and is buried in New Sequim View Cemetery, Sequim, Clallam County, Washington.

 

Mary (Roberts) McFarland, the wife of Frank, died April 2, 1947 in Sequim, Clallam County, Washington.  She is buried in New Sequim View Cemetery, Sequim, Clallam County, Washington.

 

Preston Maddox, Jr. died in Fresno, Fresno Co., California, the day before Christmas, 1952.

 

George Medbury McFarland/MacFarland died March 6, 1965, at the age of eighty-seven years and thirteen days, in Bellingham, Washington.  He is buried in the Bayview Cemetery beside his wife, Anna (Hein) who had died less than a month earlier, April 12, 1965.

Military

M. H. McFarland fought in the 5th Ohio Cavalry with companies D & M as a Private during the Great Civil War. He served from September 11, 1861 to July 20, 1865.
