John Sufficool was born in
Pennsylvania on 2 Feb. 1835. On 15 Aug. 1862, he enlisted at Mineral Point
in the 30th Regiment, Company B, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.
According to a history of Clark County, he was a guard during the duration
of his military service. His rank was sergeant, and he was honorably
discharged on 20 Sept. 1865. Before the
war, and for a short while after, John worked at mining. He married
Annie
Huntley on 4 April, 1864 in Milwaukee and they had at least two sons and
5 daughters. In about 1868, he came to Clark County nearly penniless, and
built a log house in the wilderness. While he was clearing land, he also
worked as a stone mason. He served as chairman on the town board of Weston
and was a member of the Masons. About sixteen years before his death, he
suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed and made him an invalid.
He died on
the 30th of January in 1887 and is buried in the Neillsville City
Cemetery, Pine Valley Twp. Clark County, Wisconsin.
