Edward E. Stanley, who served in the Civil War in the 1st Illinois Company L, was born in Canada on the first of October in 1843. After the war, he was a cook for those who worked on the log drives on the Black River. He married Elmira (or Alvira) Shupe, the daughter of Tobias and Mary Shupe, in Beaver, Clark County, Wisconsin in September of 1878. They had two children, William, who was living in Virginia at the time of his mother’s death from pneumonia in 1909, and Mrs. Eleanor Harder, who with her daughter, lived with Edward in Neillsville at the time of his death on December 12, 1912.
