Family stories are that Albert changed his name from HOMERNICK to SCHOLTZ when he came to the U.S. in hopes of avoiding the Prussian draft.
On June 19, 1880, Albert Scholtz was married to Bertha ZIPFEL, daughter of George Frederick and Christina (LEIDHOLDT) Zipfel from Township of Grant, Clark, at Neillsville. They made their home in Sherwood Township, Clark, where Albert engaged in farming and logging operations.
The Scholtz couple had six children: Albert Jr. born in 1881 (married Theora Petrine) Clara born in 1883 (married William Baker) Mayme born in 1884 (married Albert Gall) Frank born in 1888 (married Arlene Anderson) Ralph born in 1890 (married Clara Gall) and Louis born in 1893 a month after his father's death (married Mary Huckstead).
Albert Scholtz died Aug 3, 1893 in LaCrosse, WI, where he went seeking medical treatment. His cause of death was stated as brain fever. His remains were shipped to Neillsville, where he is buried in the Neillsville City Cemetery in an unmarked grave.
Bertha Scholtz remarried twice after Albert's death. Her second husband was Hans Tompson with whom she had daughter Minnie Tompson, born in 1896 (married John Voegeli).
This marriage ended in divorce.
Bertha remarried Henry Frechette in 1897 and three children were born to them Isabelle born in 1898 (married William Tullis) Anita (born 1901, died 1903) and Beulah born 1906 (married Floyd Defoe). This marriage ended in divorce also.
Bertha Scholtz Frechette spent the remainder of her days on her Sherwood Township, Clark County, farm. Her sons helped to run the farm. Bertha died Dec. 14, 1933, and is buried in the Sherwood Cemetery with daughter Anita.
