John Tatro
John A. Eaton G.A.R. Post #213 Member, Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin
John Tatro was born January 23, 1842 in Dunham, Quebec, Canada, and was baptized Jean Baptiste Ducharme, the eldest son of Moyse "Moses" and Marie-Angelique "Mary" (Plante) Tatro. His siblings were: Henriette "Harriet Jane," b. abt. 1839 in Quebec; Joseph, b. 17 Aug., 1843 in Vermont; Thadeus, b. 4 Oct., 1845 in VT; Zoa, b. abt. 1848 in VT; and Phoebe Ann, b. 8 Feb., 1854, Chase, b. 1855, and William, b. 1859, all three born in Madison, Wisconsin.
John, at the age of nineteen, enlisted in the Union Army of the Great Civil War as a private with Company "E" of the 4th Minnesota Regiment along with his brother Joseph who was just turning eighteen. Company "E" mustered in November 27, 1861. During the battle at Iuka, Mississippi, September 19, 1862, Joseph was slightly wounded, but both boys did return home after the war.
March 3, 1866, John married Maria Cass in Owatonna, Steele Co., MN (Vol. A, pg. 93). She was the daughter of Jehiel and Sarah Cass, who owned a neighboring farm. John’s brother, Thadeus, married Maria’s sister, Olive Cass, on February 26, 1875 (Vol. A, pg. 393). Following the death of Maria in 1897, John was married for a second time on July 17, 1900, to Joanna Newcomb in Crookston, MN. She was the daughter of Harold and Sarah (Spencer) Newcomb and had been the previous wife of I. P. Cummings. Joanna and I. P. Cummings were the parents of four children who were all born in Whitehall, WI: Olive C., b.18 Jun 1872; Asa S., b. 3 Aug 1874; Sarah J., b. 16 Jul 1878; and D. Wilbur, b. 21 Aug., 1880.
Our first record of John Tatro in Greenwood, WI, is in October, 1902, when he served as pall bearer at the funeral of H. W. Varney, another member of the Greenwood, Clark Co., Wisconsin, John A. Eaton GAR (post #213). It is also noted that he attended a Reunion of Civil War Veterans held in Neillsville, WI in June 1903, with his residence given as Greenwood. The 1910 Federal Census shows him in Greenwood, but in 1911 he sold his property there, and in the 1920 Federal Census he is living with his son Moses H. Tatro in Helgeland Twp., Polk Co., MN.
In "The History of the 4th Minnesota Regiment" which was published in 1892, John and Joseph Tatro are listed on the Roster for Company "E" as having been born in Canada. They joined the service October 15, 1861 at Owatonna, MN as some of the first recruits to the Union Army. Prior to the war, they were residents of Meriden, Steele Co., MN. John re-enlisted for another three years service on January 1, 1864 at Huntsville, AL, and was honorably discharged with his company at the rank of Sergeant on August 7, 1865. Joseph was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Cops, March 15, 1865. The 1890 Special Schedule for veterans shows John residing in District 143, Walsh Co., North Dakota.
John died April 1, 1923 at age 80, in Colburn Township, Chippewa Co., WI, at the home of his son Moses Henry Tatro. His daughter Elsie, Mrs. George Leslie McElmurry, was also a resident of Colburn. John’s remains were returned to be buried with his first wife, Maria, in the Greenwood Cemetery, at Warren, Marshall Co., MN.

In 1911, John Tatro sold his property which was located a half block south of the M. E. Church in Greenwood, Wisconsin. Frank Carter served as the auctioneer and the advertisement above ran in the Greenwood Gleaner, January 19, 1911.

EugeneRTatro Posted: 26 Oct 2001 9:46AM
Hi Brenda:
Mathilda Clear and Joseph Tatro married at Lemond MN on 18 Jan 1868. She died at Akeley MN on 11 Feb 1935; he died at Crosby MN on 5 July 1930 -- he is buried in Swanville. Their son Edwin married Mary McClintick at Grey Eagle MN on 9 June 1894 -- she died at Nevis MN, ca.l906. Their son Walter b. Todd Co. MN, 26 Nov 1898; d. Swanville MN 5 Aug 1915. Joseph (Matilda's husband) was the son of Moses Tatro and Mary A Plant, the marriage record for whom has yet to be found. Because of that, the parents of Moses are not definitely known. It is known, however, that he and Mary came from Canada where they had two children, Henriette (aka Harriet in the US) and Jean-Baptiste (aka John in the US). In Canada, Moses was known as Moyse and Mary A was known as Marie-Angelique. Until their marriage record is found, their ancestry appears to be in limbo.

Willie Harding - son of Joseph & Matilda Tatro
widowcallie Posted: 18 Mar 2003 8:46PM Surnames: TATRO
He's related to some names already on this site! He married Anne Myers in Little Falls, Morrison Co, MN on 6/2/1909. 1910 census has them & a newborn dgt living with his parents Joseph & Matilda in Swanville, also in Morrison Co. Does anyone know what happens to them, as they simply disappear? p.s. there are several Tatro names listed in Morrison Co, MN; let me know if you need anything looked up @ the recorder's office, as I go there monthly!

Eugene R Tatro (View posts) Posted: 19 Mar 2003 3:08PM
Hi Terri:
Willie Harding Tatro, son of Joseph and Mathilda (Clear) Tatro, was one of at least five children. Willie, born Deerfield MN on May 9, 1878, married Annie Catherine Myers, as you stated; she was the daughter of Charles Monroe and Catherine (Betzold) Myers, and was born Elmdale MN on Aug 27 1889. Willie and Annie had only two daughters that I know of: Clara Loretta at Swanville MN on Apr 12, 1910, and Josephine Alice at Elmdale MN on Dec 3, 1912. They may possibly have had others, but perhaps not in MN. Annie died in Coeur D'Alene ID in March of 1929; Willie died in Grand Harbor ND on July 13, 1932. The ancestry of Willie H Tatro has not been established back to the original ancestor, Louis Tetreau, who was in Canada by 1660. The parents of Joseph (Willie's father) were Moses and Mary (Plant) Tatro. The record of their marriage, believed to have occurred in Canada, has yet to be found -- therefore the parents and lineage of Moses is not known. Mary (Plant) Tatro is said to have died in Meriden MN between 1859 and 1864; Moses remarried to Eliza Ann (Knowlton) at Owatonna MN on Jan 25, 1865 -- she was previously married to a Mr. Whipple. Moses is said to have died in Medford or Fordville ND after 1891 or 1900.

Moyse/Moses Tetreau/Tatro & Mary A Plant
tetreau_tatro Posted: 18 Sep 2006 7:22PM
Moyse/Moses Tetreau/Tatro & Mary A Plant (aka Marie-Angélique Plante) married probably c.1836-38, in P.Qué? Moyse's surname could also be Ducharme, which is a branch of the Tétreau family. First two children, Henriette and Jean-Baptiste born 5 June 1839 and 23 Jan 1842 respectively, in Dunham PQ; both baptized 5 Mar 1843 in Henryville PQ. By 17 Aug 1843, family was in VT, where Joseph was born. The names of first two children were "Americanized" into Harriet and John. The marriage record and parents' names for Moses and Mary A Plant is being sought.

I have a marriage record for Alexis Brouillette and Marie-JUDITH Tetreau at Marieville, Que. in 1822. Could this be the one you seek? If so, I have the ancestry of Marie-Judith back to Louis Tetreau who was in Canada by 1660. Reach me by e-mail at etatro@iopener.net, or write P.O.Box 234, W.Newbury, MA 01985. I do not charge for this work, nor do I send genealogies out over the Net, in which case, I would need your postal mailing address.

Research Notes
I am quite puzzled over this second wife of John Tatro. I gather the family has not taken much interest in her, seems the relationship did not turn out well. Do you know who her first husband was? There were two Israel Perkins Cummings, father and son of his first wife, Mary Priscilla Hale. Some have her spouse of the father, he being 25 years older than her. Although a little younger, the son is much closer to her age. The father did die in 1898, in time for her to be a widow to marry John Tatro in 1900. To be spouse of the son, they would have need to be divorced, for, apparently, he had another wife and children later. It seems she and John parted company. What happened to Johanna? Harry Tatro.
A little more search and I have the answer: The 1880 census of Lincoln, Trempealeau, Wisconsin, shows clearly that "Joanna" age 36 is wife of Israel P. Cummings age 61 and Israel P. Cummings son age 34 is single. The "old man" and young wife have only their daughter Sarah J. age 1 listed. That raises another question - what happened to their two previous children, Olive born in 1872, and Asa born in 1874? Harry Tatro.
