Pulling Pine Stumps
Greenwood, Wisconsin
Nearly Killed by Sweep
Frank Ditton, who was helping F. Halkney with a stump-pulling machine at the latter's farm last week Friday, had a very narrow escape from death. The long sweep attached to the machine, came out of its socket and swung through the air at an enormous velocity, striking Ditton across the nose and left side of the face, bruising it badly and knocking him unconscious and it was first thought that he was killed. Aside from the severe bruises and cuts on the face, the lobe of the let ear was nearly severed. Had the blow not been a glancing one, it would have crushed in the skull like an eggshell. Mr. Ditton is doing nicely under the doctor's care. Greenwood Gleaner, Thursday, September 20, 1909.
