Chalmer & Alice Estelle (Corey) Perkins

Chalmer Perkins was born Dec. 3, 1884, to Jesse S. and Nancy
Catherine (Tucker) Perkins at Jefferson, Iowa, where he also received a public school
education. His father was born July 9, 1836 in Rushville, Rush County, Indiana
and his parents were married August 25, 1855, in Green County, Iowa.
Chalmer married the former Alice Estelle Corey at Omaha, Nebraska, on September 3, 1912. She was born on Oct. 25, 1892, at Westfield to Charles and Stella Corey. She received her education in various schools in Wisconsin and Iowa.
Mr. Perkins was a barber for 47 years, most of the time in Clark County. He
worked and resided in Greenwood for 22 years. In April 1951 he sold his barber
shop to Carl Friedl. He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church.
His brother, Chauncey, lived in California, and his brother, William,
resided in Minneapolis, Minneapolis. His other nine siblings died before
he did. Chalmer Perkins died at his home in Greenwood just past midnight, April
1, 1952. He had been in ill health for nearly a year.
Alice was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Royal neighbors since 1921. Her sister was Mrs. Olive Newman who, like Alice, spent her senior years at the Memorial Home in Neillsville, Wisconsin. She also had three other sisters and two brothers who died before Alice died at the age of ninety-one on Friday evening, June 1, 1984, at Memorial Home. She had been a widow for thirty-two years.
Chalmer and Alice are both buried in the Greenwood City Cemetery.

Chalmer Perkins had a barbershop in the building above after it was converted to a grocery store.

Hank Johnson's first barber shop was a unique one being a cart on wheels which he moved from place to place. Later, he located in the building where Louie Brown now is and ran a confectionery shop in connection. This barber shop changed hands many times. It is now owned and run by Louis Brown. Mr. Noetzel, on first coming to Greenwood, built what is now the Ed Fahey building and ran a barber shop. In the 90's Charles Tripp had a shop in what is now an addition to Hoehne's Hardware store. The re are now four barber shops in Greenwood: C. Perkins', John Meng's, Louis Brown's and Leo Albright's. "Greenwood-Hub of Clark County, Wisconsin" (1934).
