Gold Star Warriors Harley Worchel (copy of the original photo provided by Crystal Wendt) Corporal Harley Worchel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Worchel, Town of Seif, was inducted into the army on January 18, 1943. He received his training at Camp Butner, Camp Davis, and Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Following maneuvers in Tennessee, he was transferred to the Army Air Corp. After graduating from the flexible gunnery school at Tyndall Field, Florida, he was assigned as a tail gunner on a B-24 bomber. Harley was killed in a plane crash on August 9, 1944 in the Azores Islands enroute to Europe. He was laid to rest in the Allied Cemetery at Lagens, Terceira, Azores.
