At the time the furniture factory in Neillsville burned last summer, a mass
meeting was held to see what steps could be taken to induce the firm to rebuild
their plant there. This committee has been in correspondence with the firm in
Baltimore, and last week received a definite answer, stating that they would
rebuild and resume business in Neillsville on condition that the city give them
a bonus of $20,000. This offer was discussed and another meeting of citizens was
called at the opera house last Friday night. S. M. Marsh was elected Chairman
and H. C. Clark Secretary. After several speeches by some of the businessmen and
members of the committee showing the effect on business, etc. by the destruction
of the factory, plans were suggested to raise the bonus, and it was decided to
raise it by personal contributions.
The businessmen of the city gave liberally and in a short time $6,700, one third
of the amount was promised in contributions of from $750 to $1,000.
A finance committee was appointed to take charge of the funds and solicit other
moneys, and by Monday night the fund had reached over $10,000, over half of the
required sum.
