Passenger trains going south are crowded with men from the numerous lumber
camps, who are returning to their homes after the campaign in the woods. The
risks of life and limb “among the pines” is something akin to the dangers of
warfare, and those who come through unharmed have a reason for gratitude, if
they consider their life worth anything.
