Smith, Alice Mae (3 APR 1906 - 19 DEC 2001)


Alice Smith, 95, Neillsville, died on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Memorial Nursing Home, Neillsville. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Wednesday Dec. 26 at the Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville. The Rev. Craig Conklin of the United Methodist Church officiated. Music was provided by Charlotte Drescher, organist and Jody Rueth, soloist. Interment was in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Casket bearers were James Breitung, Scott Breitung, Christopher Czarnik, Brent Smith, Nathan Smith and Mark Straube.

Alice Mae Smith was born on April 3, 1906 in Brookside, to Abraham and Mary (nee Rowell) Hyland. She married Bergen Smith on Oct. 22, 1925, in Menomonie. After their marriage, they farmed throughout Wisconsin and then moved to Neillsville around 1930, where they continued to farm. In 1945, they moved to Neillsville. She worked for the Clark County Shopper. She also worked as a nurse's aide for the old Neillsville Hospital on 4th Street and also for Memorial Medical Center at its current location. She also worked as a store clerk at Gluck's Shore Store in Neillsville. She enjoyed square dancing. Her husband died on May 30, 1979.

Survivors include nine children, Etta (Robert) Czarnik, Neillsville, Darwin (Roxanne) Smith, Augusta, Duane (Carla) Smith, Racine, Gladys (Art) Bowen, Mesa, Ariz., Bonnie (Charles) Straube, Grafton, Nancy (James) Breitung, Neillsville, Arlo (Shirley) Smith, Colorado Springs, Colo., Ralph (Iris) Smith, Harbor Springs, Mich., and Herb (Dawn) Smith, Milwaukee 21 grandchildren numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren one daughter-in-law, Voyna Smith three sisters, Mary Massicotte, Kingsford, Mich., Violet Putnam, Oconto, and Peggy Peterson, Kingsford, Mich.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Bergen four children, Everett Smith, Marie Mueller, Betty Smith and Oakley Smith five sisters, Irene Brendemihl, Grace Allen, Rose Geil, Laura Zoeller, and Doris Kriegl and four brothers, John Hyland, Donald Hyland, Robert Hyland and Elmer Hyland.

Memorial may be directed to Meals on Wheels, Neillsville.

The Gesche Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
