Howard, Rachel (30 APR 1835 - 9 OCT 1882)

Died, in the town of Grant, Clark County, Oct. 9, 1882, of fever, Mrs. Pope Howard, aged 48 years, 5 months and 9 days.

Deceased was born in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England, April 30, 1835. She left England June 15, 1852, for America, settling in Ohio. From there she went to Cook County, Ill. in 1855 was married to Robert Howard at Chicago March 31, 1856, and settled in Clark County in 1857, since which time they have remained among us, and been truly one of us in all the joys and hardships of pioneer life. Two children have gone before her and five are still living, the only married one being the wife of Simon Blackman. The deceased was an excellent nurse among the sick, possessing the most tender sympathies, and going miles to care for the sick and dying. Few in that community will be so sadly missed.
