Dutcher, Mary N. (1844 - 2 MAY 1883)
Died in this city (Neillsville, Clark County) last night, Mrs. Mary
N. Dutcher, wife of A.A. Dutcher, aged 39 years.
When a little over a week ago congratulations were poured in upon
Mr. and Mrs. Dutcher over the birth of a son, how little could be
anticipated the solemn scene of last night, when in place of the
happy, doting mother, there lay the white statue of her who had
lived and loved and filled a little home with sunshine - a maternal
Galatea turned to stone. And how much more than dramatic sadness
there was in that picture of a husband and two little daughters
bending over that peaceful face to take a last farewell, while a
baby boy slept unconscious of his great loss, never on earth to be
restored, a noble mother's watchful love.
Mrs. Dutcher was indeed a noble woman, in feature, in mind and in
heart. Gifted with a beauty rarely first bestowed and still more
seldom retained at her age, she added to it a charm of manner that
left her no mere acquaintance. All who knew her were her friends.
Vivacious, but refined witty, but thoroughly kine and full of
generous sympathy, no one could know her but to esteem her. We know
of no death that, outside of relatives, has created so much sincere
sorrow. To the stricken husband and children there goes from all
their wide acquaintances a sympathy as sincere as it is
universal.
The remains will be taken to Madison this evening, where they will
be laid at rest tomorrow in that beautiful city of the dead near
the home of her childhood. May that rest be as sweet as her life
has been pure and good.
